The popular show Call the Midwife is gearing up for its 2025 Christmas special, and writer Heidi Thomas has two compelling stories planned.
Following a disaster in Hong Kong that destroyed the local Branch House, a small team from Nonnatus House travels there to help. Meanwhile, back in Poplar, Sister Catherine and Joyce continue their work, caring for two expectant mothers from the Irish Traveller community who are living in a nearby camp.
Outside Nonnatus House, Cyril has a surprising guest, and this experience helps him gain a new perspective on life.
Okay, so this movie throws you a curveball right away. We meet Mr. Fisher, a very wealthy man, who writes a letter to Cyril, a council worker. The shocking news? Mr. Fisher is dying and has a really unusual request – he wants to spend his final days in Cyril’s rented flat. Turns out, that flat was his childhood home, and he wants to return there before he passes away. It’s a fascinating setup, immediately raising questions about class, memory, and what truly makes a home.
Zephryn Taitte explained that Mr. Fisher wants to make things right with Cyril, and Mrs. Wallace is happy to receive compensation. Taitte also mentioned Mr. Fisher is Jewish, so they decided to celebrate Hanukkah with a Festival of Lights in his honor.
Taitte described the experience as wonderful for Cyril, explaining that it’s a touching story about looking back on life and valuing what you have. This is why Cyril spends time thinking about his past, present, and future – particularly his relationship with Rosalind.

Taitte added that the story reminded Cyril of what truly matters – the people he shares his life with. She described it as a heartwarming Christmas tale.
Cyril and Rosalind began to develop a connection last year while working together to help an escaped prisoner say a final farewell to his mother by arranging a funeral. It all happened during a special holiday episode.
Rosalind and Cyril grew closer after they began volunteering together at a homeless shelter. When Cyril and Lucille officially started divorce proceedings, Rosalind and Cyril’s relationship continued to flourish, even with difficulties like Joyce discouraging Rosalind from pursuing it and facing prejudiced reactions from others.
This remains true, as shown in a recent scene from this year’s Christmas special. Though things began uncertainly, the couple is now more secure and optimistic about what’s to come.
Call the Midwife will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.
