Camilla Luddington Teases “Huge” Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Finale

With a Grey’s Anatomy finale, the possibilities are endless—but Camilla Luddington is offering a small hint about what to expect.

With the season 22 finale set to air on May 7th, the show has several storylines to wrap up. Camilla, who has portrayed Dr. Jo Wilson for nine seasons, says the final episode will be a major event.

“It’s massive,” Camilla shared with TopMob News in a recent interview. “When we first read through the script, I was genuinely worried about how we would film it, especially with such a tight, three-week shooting schedule. It just seemed impossible!”

Now that filming for the final episode is complete, the actress, 42, shared a small hint about what’s next for her character. This comes after her return to work following a difficult birth – she and her partner, Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack), recently welcomed twin baby girls.

Camilla said that Jo is facing a major turning point at the end of the season and has some important choices to make.

The host of Call It What It Is also experienced a sad farewell behind the scenes, as longtime co-stars Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd recently announced they were leaving the show.

“It’s been incredibly challenging,” Camilla shared. “We’ve all become like family. We’re currently filming an 18-episode season, and I’ve worked with Kevin on shows that lasted 25 episodes—you really get close to people after spending that much time together.”

As a long-time fan, it’s hard to imagine Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith and Cristina! Camilla Luddington, who’s been with the show for so long now alongside James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson, said it’s going to feel really weird on set without Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh. But she hinted that they might come back for at least a few episodes, saying she’s hopeful we’ll see them next season. It’s a little comforting to know that’s a possibility!

After a very emotional season of Grey’s Anatomy, the actress is focusing on spending time with her family. She and her husband, Matthew Alan, have two children: a 9-year-old daughter named Hayden and a 5-year-old son named Lucas.

With sports season in full swing, we’re spending every weekend at T-ball and softball games,” said the mother of two.

Camilla’s busy schedule with games and practices means she’s been relying on familiar snacks like Gerber Get’Ems, especially their new Squeezies purees.

As a lifestyle expert and a mom myself, I’m always on the lookout for easy snacks that my kids actually enjoy. These new snacks are a total game-changer for me – they make those little moments between meals so much simpler. Honestly, it feels like a win when I can give my kids something made with real fruits and vegetables instead of sugary treats. I’m excited about these and really want to share them with other moms who are looking for healthier, stress-free snack options!

Camilla plans to spend some time with her co-stars during her break, particularly to say heartfelt goodbyes to Kim and Kevin as their time on the show ends.

She said they should have dinner and reminisce. She also suggested it would be a special moment just for the two of them.

As a longtime Grey’s Anatomy fan, I know how hard it is to see our favorite doctors go. It always feels like saying goodbye to friends! If you’re like me and wonder what happened to all the doctors who’ve left Seattle Grace over the years, I’ve got you covered – keep reading to find out where they are now.

During the third season, Burke unexpectedly left Cristina at their wedding and moved away. He went on to achieve success, winning a prestigious Harper Avery award and eventually establishing a cutting-edge hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. He built a life there with a family, and later, in season ten, he asked Cristina to take over his hospital when he decided to retire.

Isaiah Washington was fired from the show after reports surfaced that he used a homophobic slur against his co-star, T.R. Knight, during an on-set argument with Patrick Dempsey. His attempts to defend himself only worsened the situation. However, he later reconciled with ABC and made a guest appearance in 2014.

Washington publicly apologized for the incident and acknowledged he needs to reflect on his own behavior. He stated he’s seeking help to understand and address these issues.

Since leaving Grey’s Anatomy, he’s appeared in several successful shows. He played Thelonious Jaha on The CW’s The 100 until his character was killed off in the fifth season, and then went on to star in the critically praised P-Valley on Starz.

Izzie Stevens faced a cancer diagnosis, married Alex Karev, and overcame the illness, but she unexpectedly left the show during season six. She briefly reappeared, explaining she no longer felt connected to Seattle. We later learned Alex received divorce papers, and that Izzie had secretly given birth to their twins. She’s now living on a ranch in Kansas and working as a surgeon.

Katherine Heigl’s departure from the show started in 2008 when she decided not to submit her name for an Emmy award because she wasn’t satisfied with the storylines. By 2010, her character was written off entirely. While Heigl has expressed interest in revisiting the role, creator Shonda Rhimes has stated she’s moved past that storyline, telling TVLine in 2015 that she was finished with it.

Katherine Heigl first became well-known for starring in romantic comedies. After a few more of those films, she transitioned back to television with shows like State of Affairs and Doubt. More recently, she appeared in an arc on Suits and starred in Firefly Lane, which concluded in 2023.

Norman joined the show in its fourth season, but people often mistook him for a doctor instead of an intern because of how old he looked. He made a serious mistake by mistakenly telling a patient she was terminally ill, and later suffered a stroke. After successful surgery to remove a blood clot, he decided to switch his medical focus to psychiatry.

I was so saddened to hear of Edward Herrmann’s passing back in 2014. He was a truly wonderful actor, and for me, he’ll always be Richard Gilmore from Gilmore Girls. But he had such a fantastic career beyond that show – I also really enjoyed seeing him in The Good Wife, Harry’s Law, and even a few episodes of American Dad! He really brought something special to every role he played.

Sydney temporarily replaced Bailey while she was on maternity leave, and her overly enthusiastic personality often annoyed her coworkers. She briefly dated Derek, but her character was written off the show early in season four. She made a quick return for an episode in season 21, which aired in 2024.

Kali Rocha is an actress known for her roles on Disney’s Liv and Maddie and Man with a Plan, and she recently appeared in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2024.

One of the most heartbreaking moments in the series happens at the end of season five. George, after deciding to join the army as a trauma surgeon, heroically saved a woman from being hit by a bus, but was struck himself. Arriving at the hospital severely injured, he was unrecognizable until he wrote his nickname, ‘007,’ on Meredith’s hand. Despite their best efforts, he couldn’t be saved and tragically passed away.

Following a period of backstage conflict – including a reported incident where Isaiah Washington used offensive language towards him – actor Knight had issues with some of his character’s storylines and the limited screen time he received at the start of season five. This led him to request a release from his contract.

Knight revisited Shondaland in 2017 with a role on The Catch, and has since been seen in shows like The Good Wife, 11.22.63, and Genius. Starting in 2019, he began voice work on The Bravest Knight, continuing until 2024. From 2020 to 2022, he also appeared in the HBO Max series The Flight Attendant alongside Kaley Cuoco.

He also returned to Grey’s for one episode to meet Meredith during her COVID-19 coma in season 17.

Erica Hahn and Callie Torres were in a promising relationship, but it ended when Erica discovered Izzie Stevens had disconnected Denny Duquette’s life-support device, hoping to save him. That heart transplant ultimately went to Denny, and the donor heart had come from one of Erica’s own patients. When Callie wouldn’t report what Izzie did, Erica broke up with her and resigned from her position at the hospital early in season five.

Megan, one of the interns on Grey’s Anatomy, was known for her complicated relationships. She found herself in a love triangle with Steve and Pierce, dating Pierce while also having a brief affair with Steve. This led to a lot of conflict, including Pierce threatening Steve, and Megan eventually becoming pregnant with Steve’s child. Despite the drama, Megan and Steve ended up getting married, but she hasn’t appeared on the show since season six, after Derek Shepherd brought her back to work.

Since her time on Grey’s Anatomy, Molly Kidder has continued to act, appearing in shows like Outsourced in 2010 and several independent films. More recently, in 2025, she had a small role as an extra in Ghosts.

Pierce, who was part of a complicated love story with Megan and Steve, left the show in season six after being laid off. Since then, Joe Williamson, the actor who played Pierce, has been in several other projects, including the TV show Here and Now and the 2019 movie Ford v Ferrari, alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon.

Percy tragically died during the filming of season six. His death was particularly harrowing, as he was trapped with a patient (Mandy Moore!) and Bailey, and shot at point-blank range. Despite Bailey’s efforts to save him, he couldn’t be rescued when the elevators stopped working during the evacuation.

Robert Baker has had a successful acting career, with roles in popular shows like Riverdale, Modern Family, and The Originals. He recently played Otis Graves on Supergirl, and in 2025, he made a guest appearance on St. Denis Medical.

She last appeared regularly on Grey’s Anatomy in a memorable (and slightly divisive) musical episode during season seven, where she assisted in saving Callie after a car accident. Lexie’s death was a deeply emotional moment for viewers. The plane crash storyline was particularly heartbreaking, and she tragically died before she could be brought back to the hospital. Her boyfriend, Mark Sloan, was devastated. Later, in a poignant scene during Meredith’s COVID-19 coma, Lexie and Mark appeared to suggest they had found each other again after death, offering a bittersweet sense of closure.

Chyler Leigh first appeared in the comedy series Taxi Brooklyn. She then became known for her strong and determined character, Alex Danvers, in Supergirl. More recently, since 2023, she’s been playing Kat Landry in the Hallmark series The Way Home.

Mark, known as ‘McSteamy,’ also died in the season eight plane crash, but not right away. He managed to get back to the hospital and survived for a few days, though his injuries were too serious to overcome. As a tribute to him and Lexie, the hospital was later renamed using funds from a lawsuit won by the other plane crash survivors. In a touching moment, Mark appeared alongside Lexie while Meredith was in a coma, suggesting they found each other again after death.

Eric Dane departed the show to lead the cast of TNT’s The Last Ship, which concluded after five seasons in November 2018. He now stars in the HBO series Euphoria alongside Zendaya, and is scheduled to appear in the highly anticipated third season.

In April 2025, the actor announced he had been diagnosed with ALS, a disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Do you remember Jo’s boyfriend from season nine, the OGYN resident? They had a big argument when he discovered she’d been keeping secrets, and it escalated into a physical fight. Following the devastating plane crash, Cristina Yang faced a difficult recovery. Later, she was heartbroken to learn she wouldn’t win the prestigious Harper Avery award, leading her to consider new opportunities. A surprising offer came from her former love, Preston Burke, who invited her to Zurich to lead his state-of-the-art hospital as he prepared for retirement with his family. After a final, celebratory dance with Meredith, she accepted and left in season 10.

Additionally, she provides voice work for a character in Robert Kirkman’s animated series, Invincible.

Shane started as a confident, but inexperienced, intern and quickly became a dedicated resident, pushing himself to the point of exhaustion. He developed a close bond with Cristina and eventually asked to join her when she moved to Zurich, and she agreed.

Gaius Charles, who many fans know as Smash Williams from Friday Night Lights, has also been in Aquarius and Taken. He recently appeared in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Let’s talk about navigating big life changes, because sometimes careers pull us in different directions. I remember watching Derek Shepherd go through this – he landed an amazing opportunity working for President Obama in D.C., and naturally wanted his family to join him. It was tough when Meredith wasn’t able to uproot her life, and they faced a period of distance. Ultimately, he realized what truly mattered – being present for his family – and found a way to make his career work from home, prioritizing what was most important.

After finally finding happiness with Mer in season 11, he was driving back to resolve some unfinished business when he came across a serious car crash. He spent hours helping those injured, but tragically, was then struck by a truck while returning to his own vehicle. The hospital he was taken to wasn’t equipped to handle severe trauma, and doctors didn’t order a crucial head scan, which ultimately led to his death.

Patrick Dempsey explained he left Grey’s Anatomy because the show’s storylines were becoming difficult to maintain and he wanted to prioritize spending time with his family, so he requested an early release from his contract. After leaving Grey’s, he appeared in Bridget Jones’ Baby, the miniseries The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, the series Devils, and even did commercials playfully referencing his past role as a TV doctor. Currently, he’s starring in Dexter: Original Sin.

He shockingly returned to Grey’s for a series of dream sequences in season 17.

Penelope’s time at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital was challenging. She started off on the wrong foot, arriving as Callie’s girlfriend and being known as one of the doctors connected to Derek’s death, which made working with Meredith difficult. Later, when she landed a great job in New York and Callie joined her, it led to a painful custody battle with Arizona. They’ve since broken up, and it seemed their relationship was never going to work out in the long run, which ultimately led to Arizona moving to New York as well.

During Season 13, Dr. Minnick replaced Richard Webber as the residents’ teacher, but she was widely disliked – Meredith was even suspended because of conflicts with her. Ultimately, Minnick was fired after prioritizing strict rules over patient safety. She failed to inform the police that a resident, Stephanie, was missing during a fire, nearly resulting in a tragic outcome.

Marika Dominczyk later appeared on ABC’s brief series Whiskey Cavalier, with her husband, Scott Foley, who is also known for his role on Grey’s Anatomy.

After a difficult season – including the loss of her boyfriend, Kyle (Wilmer Valderrama), and a near-fatal fire – Stephanie decided she needed a fresh start and set off to explore new possibilities.

Jerrika Hinton continued her acting career with roles in the HBO drama Here and Now in 2018 and the Amazon series Hunters, where she played a Nazi hunter. More recently, in 2024, she appeared as Lycia in The Accused.

They moved to Los Angeles together with Megan’s adopted child. While it ended his developing romance with Meredith Grey, it gave Riggs the happy ending he’d always hoped for.
