Camp Mystic Survivor, 13, Details “Hysterical” Scene of Texas Flood

Stella Thompson is reflecting on a terrifying experience. 

Following the tragic loss of 27 people, including campers and staff, at Camp Mystic in Texas due to the unexpected floods on July 4th, a 13-year-old camper shared her experiences and emotions as they anxiously awaited the arrival of rescue personnel.

Thompson shared with NBC News Dallas Fort-Worth on July 7 that it was the uncertainty that caused quite a stir in our cabin. He went on to explain how they found out that people nearby along the Guadalupe River were in immediate danger and were already being evacuated. “Once we received this news, we all became quite distraught,” he said. “The entire cabin was filled with prayers, fear, and apprehension, but not for ourselves.

Meanwhile, the teenager recollected feeling anxious about people’s safety, but she found it challenging to fully comprehend the scale of the calamity as it unfolded because she was ordered to remain indoors at her Cypress Lake residence until assistance arrived.

During that incident, I had a strange sense of detachment, almost as if I were feeling nothing at all, Thompson explained. As I verbalize it now, it’s becoming clearer to me the reality of the situation and just how severe it truly was.

It wasn’t until after Thompson, who had only recently arrived for her sixth year at summer camp ahead of the floods, and everyone else in her cabin had been safely evacuated by military vehicles in the evening, that she could witness the destruction the floods had brought about.

Thompson clarified, “Kayaks were found lodged among the trees, which was quite shocking since we didn’t anticipate this. It was disheartening because some individuals spotted a few logs amidst the wreckage. Rescue workers were even retrieving bedsheets of girls from the water.

Observing that “immense trees” were uprooted from their bases as well, she commented, “Camp Mystic no longer resembled its original self.

Over the past century, the Texas flood stands among the deadliest U.S. floods, with a confirmed death toll of 104 people as of July 7, reported by NBC News. The downpours led to a rise of 20-26 feet in the Guadalupe River, resulting in extensive property damage and local infrastructure disruption, according to their reports.

After the devastating incident, Camp Mystic – with around 750 campers present during the flood – issued a statement regarding the unfortunate event.
