The newest Hyrule Warriors game is here, and it’s special – it’s the first game in the series that tells an official, canon story. This game, a prequel called Age of Imprisonment, takes place long ago, showing Zelda caught up in the Imprisoning War. It brings back many of the things players loved about past Hyrule Warriors games, but with some new features and refinements. One of the biggest changes is how players switch weapons.
Playing missions in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment will earn you materials and new weapons. You can improve your favorite warriors by upgrading weapons or breaking them down for resources at the Weapon Research Base. However, figuring out how to change weapons isn’t always straightforward, and some characters can’t switch weapons at all. This guide explains how to swap weapons in Age of Imprisonment, and which characters have this ability.
How to Change Your Character’s Weapon in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment
You can switch between characters whenever you like while you’re on a mission. However, you can only change weapons when you’re back at the Hyrule map, choosing your next objective. Keep in mind that not all characters can change weapons, which can be tricky at first. Here’s a guide to help you prepare before your next fight.
To change a character’s weapon, first go to the main map screen. Press the + button to open the menu, then select the ‘Allies’ tab. Choose the character you want to edit, and scroll down to the ‘Weapon’ section to make your changes.

To change a character’s weapon, press the A button while it’s selected. If the character can use other weapons, a list will appear. You can scroll through the list to see details about each one. If a weapon is currently used by another character, their portrait will be displayed. Select a new weapon and press A again to equip it.

If a character isn’t able to change weapons, you’ll see information about their current weapon instead of a menu to choose a new one.
All Characters With Fixed Weapons That Can’t Be Changed in Age of Imprisonment
In Age of Imprisonment, most of the 28 characters can change weapons during the game. However, a few key characters – like Zelda, Rauru, and the Sages – have a single, permanent weapon that can’t be switched. You can still upgrade these fixed weapons at the Weapons Research Base, just like any other. Generally, the characters with more flexibility in weapon choice are the less important warriors.

The characters who can’t swap weapons in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment are:
- Ardi – Scimitar of the Seven only
- Agraston – Boulder Breaker only
- Calamo – Wanderer’s Sword only
- Mineru – Royal Mace only
- Rauru – Spear of Light only
- Qia – Lightscale Trident only
- Raphica – Great Eagle Bow only
- Zelda – Blade of Light only
Players can change weapons for any character—just go to the weapons menu, as described earlier.
