After years of legal issues, the Friday the 13th franchise is finally moving forward with a new TV series and another movie planned. Fans haven’t visited Crystal Lake in a long time! Things looked promising in 2009 with a remake that successfully returned the series to its classic slasher style, and it even became the most profitable film in the series. Unfortunately, a sequel never materialized because of a complicated legal battle, leaving Jason Voorhees on hold for over a decade.
So, here’s a fascinating bit of horror history. I recently read an interview with screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift – they were chatting about the new Sam Raimi film, but the conversation veered into what could have been. Apparently, they actually wrote a sequel to the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot! It was going to be called Camp Blood: The Death of Jason Voorhees – a title that definitely plays on fan expectations. What really surprised me was the plot: they were planning to reopen Camp Crystal Lake! Can you believe it? It’s been decades since we’ve seen the camp actually functioning in these films, and they were going to bring it back. It’s a shame we never got to see how that would have played out.
Friday the 13th Remake Sequel Details Revealed 17 Years Later

Fans of the Friday the 13th series are aware the planned sequel would have been set in winter – something the franchise hadn’t done in over thirty years and twelve films, despite taking the story to outlandish locations like space and New York City. However, in a recent discussion, it was revealed that the winter setting would have only appeared in the opening scene and wouldn’t have lasted throughout the entire movie.
The Friday the 13th series has never featured a winter setting, but the filmmakers have always wanted to explore it. They envision scenes with Jason’s breath visible in the cold air, blood contrasting against the white snow, and even him using an icicle as a weapon. The story would begin with Crystal Lake completely frozen over. Two teenagers venture onto the ice to play hockey and discover what appears to be a dead body – Whitney, a character from the previous film – frozen beneath the surface. Soon after, they notice a large figure approaching from the shore, not with a hockey stick, but with a machete.
I was so excited when Taylor Swift hinted at a snowy opening scene for the next Friday the 13th! It would have been a first for the series, and apparently, it was going to definitively show that Whitney and Clay from the last movie didn’t survive. Though, honestly, it seemed weird that Jared Padalecki would come back just to play a dead body! But the biggest reveal, at least for me, was that they were planning to reopen Camp Crystal Lake! Can you imagine? That would have been amazing.
Longtime fans will be surprised to learn this has never happened in the series before. While the first film showed preparations for Camp Crystal Lake to open, the campers never actually arrived before the killings began. Later movies used the camp as either a counselor training site or just a vacation spot. So, showing the camp officially opening would have been a completely new development for the franchise.
“We had a really awesome zipline kill that I always loved,” Shannon teased.
While this particular story won’t be part of the Friday the 13th series, the new Crystal Lake TV show is bringing the franchise back – and it looks like the infamous camp will finally reopen. With Linda Cardellini playing Pamela Voorhees and Bradley Caleb Kane (who worked on IT: Welcome to Derry) as showrunner, excitement is building for the return of this classic horror story.
