Canceled Marvel Show Finally Available In Full On DVD (But There’s A Catch)

Enthusiasts of the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series have finally got their wish for owning the entire collection in one physical package, but there’s a significant condition. A comprehensive seven-season DVD box set of this beloved Marvel show is available for purchase on Walmart’s site, yet it’s not an official new release from Marvel Studios. Instead, it’s a counterfeit product being sold by a third-party vendor on the platform. This means that its longevity might be brief as Disney’s legal team may take down the listing once they discover it. Nevertheless, this unauthorized collection underscores the strong appetite among fans for a product that Marvel Studios has yet to produce.

The television series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” was the initial live-action program within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, airing on ABC from 2013 to 2020 for seven seasons. Notably, it revived Agent Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) after his demise in “The Avengers,” and traced the adventures of his team as they navigated the repercussions of MCU events. Over time, its relationship with the main MCU became more convoluted. The later seasons, which featured extensive time travel and alternate dimensions, resulted in a timeline that deviated significantly from the film events, notably ignoring the five-year “Blip” from “Avengers: Infinity War.” This discrepancy has left the show in a state of uncertain continuity.

The situation for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. became more intricate when Marvel Studios took charge of television productions, responsible for creating shows on Disney+ that would closely tie in with cinema stories. As a result, most TV series produced under the old Marvel Television were effectively removed from the canon. However, Marvel Studios has reintroduced the Netflix Defenders Saga into the MCU timeline via Disney+, as shown by Daredevil: Born Again. Regrettably, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. remains noticeably excluded, leading to ongoing fan discussions and a sense among its devoted audience that they are being overlooked by the current studio management.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Is Long Due the Recognition It Deserves

The popularity of unauthorized DVD collections for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” highlights the enduring impact this show has had. Initially, it was a series that followed a standard procedural format, standing in the background of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. However, it didn’t take long for it to transform into one of Marvel’s most daring ventures, molding a group of agents into a captivating and close-knit surrogate family. Over the course of 136 episodes, characters such as Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), and Daisy “Quake” Johnson (Chloe Bennet) experienced extensive character development through intricate story arcs. These complex narratives, which span multiple episodes, are not feasible in a two-hour movie, making these characters beloved additions to the MCU. Additionally, the series garnered acclaim for its ability to consistently redefine itself by incorporating classic comic book themes well before the MCU films did.

The cast of the television series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has persistently demonstrated great pride in their show and advocated for its renewal. Clark Gregg, notably, refuted Disney CEO Bob Iger’s statement that Marvel hadn’t made a substantial impact on television before Disney+, demonstrating the team’s deep-rooted dedication to their work. Brett Dalton, who portrayed Grant Ward, has also shared his enthusiasm for a reunion, mirroring fan expectations. Furthermore, Adrianne Palicki, known for her role as Bobbi Morse, a beloved agent, disclosed that she was initially in discussions to appear in the films or spearhead her own spinoff series. This spinoff, called “Marvel’s Most Wanted,” even filmed a pilot episode in 2016 before it was cancelled due to changes in network priorities.

All seven seasons of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are currently streaming on Disney+.
