After 13 years, a canceled Star Wars game is now playable. When Disney bought Star Wars in 2012, they stopped several projects that were already in development, including two big-budget video games. This also meant the loss of a promising Boba Fett TV series and much of the Star Wars expanded universe, which was reclassified as Star Wars Legends. While all in-development games were put on hold, one of the two major titles has now been recovered and can finally be played.
On March 10, 2026, Time Extension announced that the online multiplayer game Star Wars: First Assault was playable. Although Disney canceled the project years ago, the game had already been fully developed and paid for. Footage leaked online about ten years ago, revealing how far along development had gotten, and several early versions have surfaced since. Now, thanks to fans who preserved and improved a closed beta version, the game is available to play.
Star Wars: First Assault Is Finally Playable

For over ten years, fans have been disappointed about the cancellation of Star Wars: First Assault. It was designed as a downloadable game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with gameplay similar to the Battlefront series. Although a public beta was planned for Winter 2012, Disney shut the project down. Leaked footage from 2015 showed about 20 minutes of gameplay from an Xbox Live beta, featuring a single level without any opponents. It essentially played like Call of Duty set on the planet Tatooine, and Star Wars fans were really excited about the potential of the game.
So, I recently stumbled upon gameplay footage of this cancelled Star Wars game, Star Wars: First Assault, and it looked seriously cool! Apparently, it was a first-person shooter where up to 16 players could battle it out as different Stormtrooper teams. Honestly, watching it, it really felt like a proper Star Wars shooter. It seems Disney cancelled it because the story didn’t quite fit with the direction they wanted to take the Star Wars universe. But the awesome part is, even though it was scrapped, fans have rebuilt it in Unreal Engine, and it looks incredible! It’s like they saved the game from being completely lost.

You can find more details about Star Wars: First Assault on their Discord server. A first test was held on March 6, 2026, to make sure everything worked as expected. Players were able to download the game an hour before the test began. The plan is to then test 8v8 matches and refine the game for a smooth experience. The Tech Beta Multiplayer file is 395 MB, so downloading it on a good internet connection should be quick (it took me less than a minute). The Discord server is also a great place to discuss the game and join matches.
