Sony is working on several projects related to God of War, including a possible 2.5D metroidvania game. Recently, screenshots surfaced of a God of War game that was ultimately cancelled. The images, discovered by Mp1st, reveal the game would have featured multiplayer and been developed by Bluepoint Games. They primarily show off the game’s environments, confirming it would have returned the series to its original setting in Greece.
The cancelled game was clearly set in Ancient Greece, as you can tell from the architecture and pottery shown in the screenshots. Players would likely have explored dark, ruined locations throughout the Greek countryside. Other environments included a mountain lake filled with sulphur pools and crumbling ruins hidden within a thick forest.
Some screenshots show early versions of the game’s 3D models, particularly those for the volcanic lake area with hot springs. We can even see how the size of these springs compared to the player character. Other images reveal unfinished Greek buildings and ruins, likely taken early in development before details were added.
So, I was reading this report with screenshots, and apparently Hades was going to be a big deal in this cancelled God of War game! He was supposed to own this area called the sulphur pools. It’s kinda crazy to think about how that would’ve fit into the whole story. It probably would’ve happened before God of War 3 on the PS3, you know, before Kratos goes and kicks his butt as a boss. We’ll never really know now, but it’s a cool what-if!
Although we haven’t seen much of the gameplay yet, one screenshot showed us what a “cursed” area would have looked like. This curse appeared as a red, corrosive effect on the surroundings, similar to rust. Unfortunately, because the game was cancelled, we’ll never know how this curse would have impacted the actual gameplay.
The cancellation of Bluepoint Games’ unannounced project was initially reported in January, as Sony decided to halt several live-service games in development at its various studios. SIE Bend Studio also had a project – a new open-world live-service game – cancelled. Sony stated that despite these cancellations, none of the affected studios would be closing down.
Both Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games are talented and important parts of the PlayStation Studios family, and we’re currently discussing future projects with each of them, according to a recent statement.
Bluepoint Games appears to have begun development on a new game. A recent job posting suggests it will be a third-person action game focused on close-quarters fighting.
