A creator who previously worked on a Cartoon Network show that was cancelled is now developing a new animated series for Netflix. The animation industry has been experiencing a lot of change lately – while some original shows are getting made, many others aren’t. Fortunately, streaming services are offering more chances for creative projects to get noticed and reach audiences, which is a positive sign for the future of animation.
Netflix is adding a new animated series called Living the Dream from George Gendi, the creator of Apple & Onion. Revealed at the Manchester Animation Festival (according to Deadline), the show follows two best friends working together who feel like they should be further along in their careers. If you enjoyed Apple & Onion, which was unfortunately cancelled, you’ll probably like this one too! You can get a first look at the series below.
What Is Living the Dream?

Created by George Gendi, the creator of Apple & Onion, and produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, Living the Dream is a London-based series about two best friends, Des and Ray. The show follows their lives as they navigate being talented guys who haven’t quite achieved success yet, but still have potential. Instead of reaching their dreams, they find themselves working for a company called Ecofood, doing social media for little pay, all while trying to keep things simple at work.
Gendi will star in the upcoming animated series, joining cast members Javone Prince, Tom Stourton, Ellie White, Chris Diamantopoulos, Stavros Halkias, Julia Davis, and Ambika Mod. She’s also a writer on the eight-episode show, collaborating with Phoebe Walsh, Ellie White, Joe Parnham, and Joe Markham. Boulder Media is handling the animation, and Sam Register, Sarah Fell, and Daniel Lennard will serve as executive producers.
What Happened to Apple & Onion?

Gendi shared his excitement about his new show, joking that achieving his dream means endlessly rewriting press release quotes until Netflix approves them. He’s hopeful they’ll accept his latest version! Fans who enjoyed Gendi’s previous work on Apple & Onion will likely be thrilled with this news.
The Cartoon Network show Apple & Onion first aired in 2018 and ran for two seasons, totaling almost 80 episodes. While it performed well on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max, it was unfortunately cancelled as part of larger changes happening with animation at Warner Bros. Discovery. Like other older shows, it lost its home, and not all of them found new platforms. Now, with Netflix, the show’s creator, Gendi, has a new opportunity to find success.
