Recently, artwork and storyboards from a cancelled video game based on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight have been released, offering a glimpse at Joker scenes that were never shown before. The Dark Knight is one of the most influential films ever made, establishing Christopher Nolan as a highly respected director with creative freedom. The movie’s dark and realistic style also influenced other superhero and action films, including those featuring Superman, Spider-Man, and James Bond. Many consider Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker to be one of the greatest in movie history, and he posthumously won an Academy Award for the role.
When The Dark Knight came out in theaters, it was a huge success, earning over $1 billion worldwide. It also sold incredibly well on DVD and Blu-ray. However, despite being common for big superhero movies, there was no video game released alongside it. Though a game was planned, it ultimately got cancelled. Electronic Arts wanted the game to coincide with the film’s theatrical release, but the developer, Pandemic Studios, requested more time. They were then given a new deadline to match the DVD release in December 2008, but unfortunately couldn’t meet it, leading to the game’s cancellation.
The Dark Knight Video Game Storyboards Reveal More Villains, New Joker Scenes
Footage of the cancelled The Dark Knight game has surfaced over time, revealing an open-world Gotham City and gameplay focused on stealth. While details are scarce, the story would have followed the plot of the movie. Like many games based on films, it would have included additional villains and scenes to extend the game’s length.
I was blown away by some newly discovered concept art for a cancelled Batman game! Apparently, the game would have featured a ton of cool villains like Victor Zsasz, Lady Shiva, Deadshot, and Firefly. What’s even more exciting is that they had storyboards with Heath Ledger’s Joker! One sequence in particular is seriously dark – it shows the Joker ambushing Batman, knocking him out with gas, and stealing a Batarang. Then, unbelievably, he uses that Batarang to kill a hostage, seemingly to make it look like Batman did it. It would have been a really intense story!
One scene depicts Joker in prison with injured legs, watching the Bat-signal in the night sky. Another shows him possibly killing a guard, hinting at a potential escape. These scenes suggest Batman severely injured Joker before he was imprisoned. A post-credits scene could have foreshadowed his breakout after the guard’s death. While the films show Joker being arrested by a SWAT team, his fate afterward remains unclear.
A novel based on The Dark Knight Rises offers some clues about what happened to the Joker. It states he was the only patient left at Arkham Asylum, with all others transferred to Blackgate Penitentiary. The book doesn’t give a definitive answer, leaving it unclear whether he escaped or remains there. Interestingly, early plans for The Dark Knight video game hinted at a potential story arc that could have brought the Joker back.
