Bluepoint Games, known for beautifully remaking games like Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls, had started developing a God of War game for PS5 that was designed to be continuously updated with new content. This project, along with a similar game from the team behind Days Gone, was ultimately cancelled. However, some of the work Bluepoint did on the game has recently been revealed online.
Recently released environmental screenshots from an MP1ST report show that the cancelled game would have taken players back to the franchise’s roots in ancient Greece. The images also offer a look at in-game assets, such as pottery, and suggest that at least one location would have dynamically changed its appearance.
One picture shows what the area known as Hades’ Armory would look like if it were affected by a curse. According to the report, all of these locations are large and open to allow for many players to explore them at once. You can find all the images in the article on MP1ST, or check out some screenshots in the social media posts below.
So, early this year, Bloomberg dropped a report saying Sony cancelled two games – one from Bluepoint Games and another from Sony Bend. Apparently, Bluepoint was working on a live-service God of War game, but it got the axe after some internal reviews. Sony said they’re working with both studios to figure out what they’ll do next and trying to soften the blow as much as possible. It’s a bummer to hear about cancelled projects, but hopefully, both studios land on their feet with something awesome.
Bluepoint Games has recently been hiring people with experience in action games where players fight in close combat, viewed from a third-person perspective. A job posting from earlier this month described working with a team – including animators, artists, and engineers – to create enemies and bosses, and to improve the game’s combat system to make it more enjoyable.
There’s talk that a new God of War game, featuring the classic Greek setting, is in development. Originally expected in 2024, it now seems likely to launch in 2026. The game is rumored to use a 2.5D visual style.
