Disney once considered making a fourth High School Musical movie. While known for huge franchises like Star Wars and Marvel, Disney also creates successful original content. High School Musical started as a Disney Channel series and ended with a big-budget movie in theaters. It was popular, and many fans expected to see the characters continue their story in college, but Disney ultimately decided against it.
The High School Musical story continued in an unusual way with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a show on Disney+ set at the real high school where the original movies were filmed. However, it wasn’t a direct sequel or spin-off – it existed separately from the movie universe. Interestingly, some of the original movie actors appeared on the show as themselves, referencing their roles in the films. Despite this, there were once discussions about making a fourth High School Musical movie.
High School Musical 4 Would’ve Kicked Off a New Trilogy and Returned to Disney Channel
On the “Get Your Head in the Game” podcast, Bart Johnson (Coach Bolton) and Jemma McKenzie-Brown (Tiara Gold) revealed that Disney had considered continuing the High School Musical series with a new trilogy. The plan involved shifting the focus to McKenzie-Brown’s character as the original cast moved on. Disney intended to bring High School Musical 4 and 5 back to the Disney Channel, then finish the story with a final movie released in theaters.
Jemma McKenzie-Brown explained that she realized Disney had long-term plans for the High School Musical franchise because she was signed on for multiple sequels. This meant she had to carefully choose her future projects. She pointed out that her agent told her actors like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens weren’t offered similar multi-film contracts after the original High School Musical, which showed Disney was thinking ahead.
It’s unclear exactly why these movies weren’t made. Disney might have decided it was too challenging to recreate the original spark with a completely new cast. While actors like Zac Efron have gone on to successful careers after High School Musical, Disney could potentially revisit the series in the future, perhaps when the original stars have children of their own who are the right age.
