Sony is working on several projects related to God of War, including a possible 2.5D metroidvania game. Recently, screenshots surfaced of a God of War game that was ultimately cancelled. The images, found by Mp1st, reveal the game was intended to be a multiplayer experience developed by Bluepoint Games, and show that it would have returned the series to its original Greek setting.
The cancelled game was clearly set in Ancient Greece, as you can tell from the architecture and the pottery shown in the screenshots. Players would have explored crumbling ruins scattered throughout the Greek countryside, along with diverse environments like a mountain lake filled with sulphur pools and overgrown ruins hidden within a dense forest.
Some screenshots show early versions of the game’s 3D models, particularly around the lake in the volcanic area with hot springs. We can even see how the size of these springs compared to the player character. Other screenshots reveal unfinished Greek buildings and ruins, confirming they were captured during the initial stages of development before detailed work was completed.
According to the report and included screenshots, Hades was intended to be a key figure in the cancelled game, specifically as the owner of the sulphur pools area. While we don’t know exactly how this would have fit into the larger God of War story, it probably would have happened before the events of God of War 3 on PS3, where Kratos battles Hades.
Although we haven’t seen much of the gameplay yet, one screenshot showed us what a “cursed” area would have looked like. This curse appeared as a red, corrosive effect on the environment, similar to rust. Unfortunately, because the game was cancelled, we’ll never know how this curse would have affected the way the game was played.
The cancellation of Bluepoint Games’ unannounced project was initially reported in January, as Sony decided to halt several live-service games being developed at its internal studios. SIE Bend Studio also had a project – a new open-world live-service game – cancelled. Following these decisions, Sony stated that none of the affected studios would be closing.
Both Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games are incredibly talented teams and important parts of the PlayStation Studios family. We’re currently working with each of them to figure out what they’ll be working on next, according to a spokesperson.
So, it looks like Bluepoint Games has moved on to a new project! From what I’ve gathered from a recent job posting, it sounds like they’re making a third-person action game, and it’s going to be heavily focused on close-up, melee-style fighting. I’m already excited to see what they come up with!
