More information about the cancelled Xbox reboot of *Perfect Dark* has recently been revealed. Originally announced at The Game Awards in December 2020 as a launch title for the Xbox Series X|S, the game quickly became highly anticipated. Developed by The Initiative, a new studio aiming for a “AAAA” level of quality, the project remained largely silent for years. A gameplay demo finally surfaced in summer 2024, looking promising, but it ultimately proved to be the only glimpse players would ever get of the game.
This summer, Xbox cancelled the highly anticipated game Perfect Dark as part of a larger restructuring. The cancellation, along with studio closures and other project cuts, left many fans worried about the future of Xbox. Things became even more disappointing when reports surfaced in August indicating that Perfect Dark could have been rescued. The development team, The Initiative, tried to find a new publisher for the game, and Take-Two Interactive, backed by Embracer Group, expressed interest. Unfortunately, they couldn’t reach an agreement, and the project was ultimately cancelled.
Cancelled Perfect Dark Reboot Gets New Gameplay Details in New Report

MP1st recently obtained a design document for the cancelled *Perfect Dark* game, offering new details about how it would have played. The development team at The Initiative noticed a lack of modern spy games, as series like *Metal Gear Solid* and *007* hadn’t released new titles in years (though both are now in development). They believed a reimagined *Perfect Dark* could fill that void, and even considered releasing the game in episodes, with plans for a “Season 1” of content.
Joanna Dark was envisioned with several unique skills. She could have slowed down time – similar to the movie *The Matrix* – to avoid bullets and aim more accurately. She would also be a highly skilled fighter, capable of performing impressive finishing moves after quickly defeating multiple enemies. Additionally, Joanna could have used adrenaline to heal herself, lessen incoming damage, and increase her own attack power, though this might have come with some drawbacks.
MP1st shared a picture of the character Joanna looking worn out, with tired eyes and disheveled hair. They speculated this appearance was caused by the in-game adrenaline, making her look like someone experiencing drug side effects. It’s unknown whether this visual change would happen based on how players act or if it’s a fixed part of the game’s story. Regardless, it’s an impressive amount of detail in *Perfect Dark*.
It’s a shame that the development of *Perfect Dark* stalled, especially since it had so much potential. While it doesn’t look likely, there’s still a small hope that another developer might step in to complete the game.
