First published in 1968, Weekly Shonen Jump has become the most popular manga magazine ever, thanks to hit series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. Even today, it remains a leader in the industry with popular titles like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia that are shaping modern manga. Notably, over half of the 23 manga series that have sold over 100 million copies appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump. While Dragon Ball is a timeless classic, many other once-popular series have faded into obscurity. Despite the number of successful titles, the magazine has seen far more underrated or canceled series than blockbuster hits.
Morihiro Hayashi’s manga, Star of Beethoven, launched in February and unfortunately didn’t find an audience or positive reviews. It was cancelled in June 2025, but Hayashi is already planning a comeback. According to manga news on X (@WSJ_manga), he’ll be publishing a one-shot manga in the Winter 2026 issue of Jump GIGA. While details are scarce, including the exact release date of the issue, GIGA typically announces these dates about a month in advance, so we should hear more in November or December. It’s currently unknown if Hayashi will return to creating full series, but this one-shot is a positive sign that he’s working on new material after a difficult experience.
What Is the Plot of Star of Beethoven?

The story follows Chiro Yaso, a talented pianist who quit playing after a disappointing performance in a competition two years prior. His life changes unexpectedly when he encounters a strange man at a convenience store – a man who speaks German and seems overjoyed to be alive. The man claims to be Ludwig van Beethoven, the famous composer who died in 1827. While Chiro is skeptical, he finds himself spending time with this unusual man and hearing his incredible story.
Ludwig van Beethoven finds himself mysteriously alive in modern-day Japan, two centuries after his death. He discovers a young man named Chiro who has lost his love for piano and is haunted by past trauma. Beethoven, a legendary pianist, helps Chiro rediscover his passion and potential. With Beethoven as his mentor, Chiro returns to the world of classical music, determined to become a historical figure like his teacher. Unfortunately, the manga series ended after just 20 chapters, but they are still available to read on the Manga Plus app.
