Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump recently ended the manga series Otr of the Flame after only 35 chapters. While the ending was abrupt, a special epilogue is planned. This cancellation marks the start of a trend for the magazine, as Shonen Jump often ends underperforming series at the beginning of the year.
The manga Otr of the Flame concluded its run in Shonen Jump with Chapter 34. The final volume will be released in Japan this March, and it will include an extra epilogue that expands on the story’s ending. This epilogue could offer a more satisfying conclusion for fans who were disappointed with the original ending.
Otr of the Flame to Continue With New Epilogue
The manga Otr of the Flame is finishing up with Volume 4, which will be released in Japan this March. While details are still unknown, this final volume will serve as an epilogue. This isn’t uncommon for cancelled series, as it allows creators to add a special touch to their ending that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Given that Otr of the Flame was originally planned as a large-scale story, it’s fitting that it receives this extra attention to conclude the series properly.
The story of Otr of the Flame started as a grand adventure, following Otr as he learned to harness the power of the Flame Spirit to defend against an invading icy army. It initially suggested a large gathering of elemental spirits would culminate in a final battle against a significant threat, and that showdown actually happened relatively early in the series—within the last 30 chapters. As a result, the story had to rush through potentially important plot points and character development.
Otr of the Flame Deserved Better
From the start, Otr of the Flame struggled to gain popularity with fans. Although the series featured appealing artwork and an interesting character power system, it didn’t seem to resonate with audiences. This was also the case in Japan, and sales figures, both within and outside of Shonen Jump, were consistently underwhelming.
This is the second time a series by Yuka Kawaguchi has been cancelled. While this new one ran for a while longer than her previous work, it doesn’t bode well for her future projects. Kawaguchi will likely need to completely rethink her approach, and may even need to find a different publisher, to improve her chances of success next time. It remains to be seen what she decides to do.
