A cancelled manga series from Shonen Jump is returning after eight years with a new anime set to premiere next year. To celebrate, a new trailer and poster have been released. It’s challenging for series to gain traction in Shueisha’s competitive Shonen magazines. While some manga find lasting success with fans, others are unfortunately cancelled before they have a chance to find an audience.
Tsuyoshi Takaki’s Black Torch had an unusual publication history, appearing monthly in both Jump Square and Jump+ magazines. However, with only under 20 chapters completed, it ultimately faced cancellation, similar to other short-run series. Now, Black Torch is getting a fresh start with an official anime adaptation set to premiere next year, and you can get a first look below.
What Does Black Torch Come Out?
The anime adaptation of Black Torch is scheduled to premiere in July 2026, but a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. Viz Media has licensed the series for release outside of Japan, though where fans will be able to stream it remains unconfirmed. Kei Umabiki will direct the anime, with animation by 100studio. Gigaemon Ichikawa is responsible for the series’ composition and script, Gou Suzuki is designing the characters, and Yutaka Yamada will compose the music.
The anime’s voice cast has begun to be announced, with Ryota Suzuki playing Jiro Azuma, Yoji Ueda as Rago, Sayaka Senbongi as Ichika Kishimojin, and Junya Enoki as Reiji Kirihara. Because the original manga only had under 20 chapters, the anime will likely adapt the entire story. However, it’s still unclear how many seasons the anime will have, as each chapter contains a lot of content.
What Is Black Torch?

Tsuyoshi Takaki first launched the series in Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine in December 2016, releasing a new chapter each month. Because of this consistent but slower release schedule, it likely didn’t gain widespread attention. The monthly wait between chapters, combined with the sheer volume of new manga released at the time, meant it was easy to overlook. Even though the series is finished, many feel it still had more story to tell.
That’s precisely what makes the new Black Torch anime so interesting. If it gets off to a strong start, it could really bring this overlooked Shonen Jump series to life and give it the attention it deserves. It’s shaping up to be a particularly important anime to watch next summer.
