Welcome to a new bi-weekly feature! Here, we’ll explore some of the most shocking and memorable moments from the world of comics – moments featuring both heroes and villains – and discuss how they affected fans and the comic book industry.
The world of DC Comics is notoriously hard on sidekicks. Just look at the stories – Tim Drake/Robin becoming an orphan, the attack on Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, and even Superboy’s descent into darkness. While being a superhero is never easy, these characters chose the life, making their hardships even more striking, especially when you consider what’s happened to others.
Jason Todd was the second character to become Robin, and he faced a tough challenge following Dick Grayson’s success as Nightwing. Sadly, Todd didn’t connect with fans, leading to a shocking decision: they voted for his character to be killed off – a memorable and controversial moment in comic book history. However, this wasn’t truly the end, as Jason Todd later returned as the Red Hood.
Jason Todd Was a Different Kind of Robin
The character wasn’t fully formed when he first appeared, but he was later developed more during the Post-Crisis era in DC Comics. Unlike Dick Grayson, who had a happy childhood before his parents’ tragic death, Jason Todd faced hardship from the beginning. His father was a criminal who was often absent, and eventually died when Jason was young, killed by Two-Face. Shortly after, Jason’s mother also passed away, leaving him to fend for himself.
When Batman first encountered Jason Todd, he immediately noticed a daring and rebellious streak – Todd even stole the tires off the Batmobile! While Batman took him on as Robin, he couldn’t tame that wild side, making Todd unpredictable in fights. Unlike the reliable Dick Grayson, Todd’s rebellious and angry nature often caused problems.
Batman wanted Jason to focus on more training, but the young Robin became obsessed with discovering the truth about his birth mother after learning his adoptive mother wasn’t his biological parent. Using information from his father and the Batcomputer, Jason narrowed down the possibilities to just three potential candidates.
Jason’s quest led him abroad, and Batman quickly pursued him once he discovered what Jason was up to. Batman even assisted in the search, eventually pinpointing Dr. Sheila Haywood, an aid worker in Ethiopia. Though a touching reunion between mother and son occurred, a shocking revelation came to light, altering the course of events for Jason Todd, Batman, and the entire DC Universe.
The Joker Brutally Murdered Jason Todd
Robin didn’t know his mother had been forced to work with the Joker again, due to secrets from her past with him. When Robin found out, he told Batman, who instructed him to wait for help. But Jason Todd, known for acting impulsively, disobeyed. He went to his mother, offering his assistance and even revealing he was Robin. Sadly, this turned out to be a mistake.
Haywood suddenly attacked Robin, leading him straight into a trap set by the Joker. Robin was quickly overwhelmed and defeated. The Joker then brutally attacked him with a crowbar, creating a shocking scene. After that, the Joker turned on Haywood, tying her to a pillar next to a bomb, and left Robin’s apparently lifeless body beside her.
Man, the whole Jason Todd thing still gets to me. Even after his own mom turned on him, he was still trying to save her! He actually did manage to get her out, but the Joker had trapped them in a warehouse and rigged it with a bomb. It was a total setup. By the time Batman showed up, it was already too late – the warehouse just exploded. He frantically started digging through the wreckage, and found Haywood first, but she was already gone. Then… he found Jason. It was brutal, honestly. He arrived too late to save either of them.
Batman cradled Robin’s body, haunted by all the ways he could have saved Jason. Though Jason Todd died bravely, his fate wouldn’t necessarily be his final one.
Death Was Only the Start for Red Hood
For years, Batman grieved the death of Jason Todd, keeping his costume displayed in the Batcave as a painful reminder. He was determined to avoid losing another partner in his fight against crime and tried everything he could to protect those who fought alongside him. However, his worst fear came true when Jason Todd unexpectedly returned, but not as the hero he once was.
After the chaotic events caused by Superboy-Prime and a brief encounter with Ra’s al Ghul’s Lazarus Pit, Jason Todd was resurrected. But he wasn’t the same Robin anymore. Consumed by anger and a thirst for vengeance, he spent years honing his skills before returning to Gotham City. He also created a new identity, one linked to the person who killed him rather than Batman.
Jason Todd’s return in the “Under the Hood” storyline was shocking – he came back as the Joker’s old alias, Red Hood. As Red Hood, he started a brutal gang war, aiming to eliminate crime and prove to Batman that his methods were more effective.
Red Hood attempted to demonstrate his perspective, but his plan ultimately failed. Rather than corrupting Batman, Batman helped Red Hood overcome his darkness. After a difficult journey, Todd gave up his quest for revenge and eventually rejoined the Batman Family.
Jason Todd’s death deeply affected Batman and became a stark warning for other young heroes in the DC Universe. While new young heroes continued to emerge, they were more aware of the dangers and sacrifices involved in fighting crime, all because of the tragedy that befell Jason Todd.
After being betrayed by his family and brutally murdered, Jason Todd somehow survived and returned from the brink of madness. He rebuilt himself, initially driven by revenge, but eventually found a new purpose as the Red Hood, seeking redemption after his time as Robin.
