The Resident Evil 2 remake was first released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019, and as is common with Capcom games, it’s since been ported to other systems. These include the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch (via a controversial cloud version), and some iPhones and iPads. But this newest version won’t be for home consoles. Called Resident Evil 2: Arcade, this arcade adaptation-which was partially revealed before-has been officially announced and will be available in a limited release in late 2025.
Although Capcom and Bandai Namco haven’t announced an exact release date, they did share a new trailer. The trailer highlights action-packed, on-rails gameplay, revisiting locations from the remake but now experienced from a first-person view. We see iconic enemies like Mr. X, infected dogs, Lickers, and hordes of zombies inside the Raccoon City Police Department. The footage demonstrates two-player cooperative play, featuring Leon and Claire as the playable characters. It’s currently unclear if more details will be released in the future.
The announcement explained that Resident Evil was selected as it was considered the “ultimate gun-shooting game” and a perfect fit for creating a top-tier experience. However, the trailer didn’t reveal some of the game’s more immersive features: it actually blows air at players and the cabinet itself vibrates. These effects are designed to make players “experience fear with their entire body.”
The Resident Evil 2 Arcade Game Is Coming Soon
Unlike other versions of the Resident Evil 2 remake, it doesn’t look like players will be able to purchase and play this version at home, unless home ports are announced later. However, the two companies involved have announced that players can try out Arcade through limited testing events. A North American test will happen in winter 2025, and a Japanese test will be held in spring 2026. Currently, the exact locations for these tests are unknown, and it’s also unclear how a wider release might happen.
There’s also been a minor title adjustment with this official announcement. Initially, it was known as Resident Evil 2: Dead Shot when IGN discovered a game machine in the UK. But the current subtitle – Arcade – appears simpler and avoids potential misunderstandings.
The Resident Evil series has a history with arcade games, particularly the on-rails shooting style. Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica was released in arcades, as well as on the PS2 (but only in Europe and Japan). Just like RE2: Arcade reimagines the RE2 remake, Survivor 2 takes ideas from the original Code: Veronica and adapts them to a different game type. Also, like Arcade, this game initially had a different subtitle – it was originally known as Fire Zone.
Survivor, Dead Aim, The Umbrella Chronicles, and The Darkside Chronicles are additional on-rails Resident Evil games released for home consoles. The last two of these games took advantage of the Wii’s motion controls and the PS3’s Move controllers, allowing players to aim and shoot like they would with a light gun in an arcade. Dead Aim also worked with the PS2’s light gun and a USB mouse. Survivor offered light gun support on the PS1 in Europe and Japan, but this feature was removed from the North American version (the PC version was only released in China and Taiwan).
