Capcom President Says “PlayStation Barrier” Price Indicates Price Conscious Players

Following the initial strong sales of Monster Hunter Wilds, there has been a noticeable decrease in subsequent sales. In an interview with Nikkei, Capcom’s president Haruhiro Tsujimoto discussed this trend and compared it to the sales of 2018’s Monster Hunter World. He also mentioned that developing Monster Hunter Wilds primarily on the PS5 has been challenging due to certain limitations, which he referred to as the “PlayStation barrier.

During the interview, Tsujimoto highlighted the importance of improving marketing efforts for Monster Hunter Wilds on the PS5. This is particularly crucial given that it retails at $70, contrasting with the more frequently discounted Monster Hunter World, which usually sells for less than $10. Additionally, he confirmed that over 28.5 million copies of Monster Hunter World were sold on the PS4.

Initially, it’s worth noting that over 28.5 million copies of “Monster Hunter: World” have already been sold, according to Tsujimoto. To attract the attention of those buyers effectively, we should strategize our promotions for “Monster Hunter Rise” appropriately.

A significant aspect in this scenario revolves around pricing. The game ‘Monster Hunter: World’, available for roughly seven years, is currently being offered at $9.90. On the other hand, ‘Monster Hunter Wilds’ retails for $70. Considering these price ranges, how many users would be inclined to make a purchase?

Regarding the significant sales success of Monster Hunter Wilds on the PS5 surpassing 10 million copies, Tsujimoto admitted to a “PS5 hurdle”, particularly in terms of cost. He points out that the PS5 costs approximately ¥100,000 at the time of purchase, while the Nintendo Switch 2 retails for only ¥49,980.

Tsujimoto agreed with Capcom’s need to expand upon the success of Monster Hunter Wilds, which sold over 10 million copies. Yet, he noted an unforeseen challenge: the ‘PS5 barrier.’ In Japan, the console costs around 80,000 yen, and when you account for software and monthly subscriptions, it amounts to roughly 100,000 yen at purchase. This sum can be difficult for younger generations to afford, a trend that appears consistent not only in Japan but overseas as well.

To broaden the reach of the game Wilds, Tsujimoto discussed various strategies. One of them was offering the game at reduced prices during sales. Another point he made was the potential of the Switch 2, given its success. He also highlighted that the console suggested that customers today might be more budget-conscious with their gaming choices.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that our forthcoming mission is to conquer these hurdles and make sure Monster Hunter Wilds reaches a wide audience. With sales set to commence soon, we’re diligently crafting a strategy to seize these chances and enhance sales all through the year.

In June 2025, the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 hit the markets at a price of 49,980 yen inclusive of taxes. The reaction surpassed our expectations, indicating that the device was well received. It’s worth noting that prices may differ from country to country, but this release served as a testament to the cost-aware attitude among typical consumers.

The game titled “Monster Hunter Wilds” can be played on personal computers (PC), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. For a comprehensive look at the game, feel free to read our review for additional information.
