Capcom has confirmed it will charge a fee to watch Capcom Cup 12 and the Street Fighter League: World Championship 2025. Previously free to view, these events will now require a paid subscription or purchase.
This year’s events will require a fee to watch the official online streams.
The announcement of this new model was met with strong negative reactions from Street Fighter 6 fans, forcing Capcom to release a statement addressing the criticism.
Many believed that the company might have walked its decision back — but that ain’t happening.
Capcom announced on social media that they’ll still be selling pay-per-view access to their fighting game events, but the price of online tickets might change.
Capcom states:
We’re introducing Pay-Per-View live streaming for CAPCOM CUP 12 and the Street Fighter League: World Championship 2025 to help us grow our eSports business steadily and successfully in the years to come.
We aim to develop these tournaments into major international competitions by supporting the players and teams involved, as well as our partners and the wider industry.
We appreciate all the feedback we’ve received and are working through this carefully with everyone involved. Because of this thorough process, things are taking a little longer than expected.
The publisher understands some people disagree with this decision, but they’re sticking to it. They believe this new model will help the company grow its esports presence in the future. It’s a bit of a questionable move, though.
Street Fighter tournaments hosted by Capcom have been a long-time favorite among fans. With the Capcom Cup being a major event in the fighting game community, many are wondering why Capcom is pursuing this new direction.
