Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are working together again on a new take on the classic thriller Cape Fear, but actor Patrick Wilson clarifies it’s not a complete remake. The filmmakers previously collaborated on the 1991 version of The Executioners, the second film based on the novel. That story followed lawyer Sam Bowden as he was relentlessly harassed by Max Cady, a convicted rapist seeking revenge after Bowden’s legal representation led to a 14-year prison sentence.
Julian Wilson stars as attorney Tom Bowden in the new Apple TV series Cape Fear, facing off against Academy Award winner Javier Bardem. The show, produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, is led by Nick Antosca, known for critically acclaimed series like the horror anthology Channel Zero and true crime dramas The Act, Candy, and A Friend of the Family.
Wilson recently spoke with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant about his new show, Jay Kelly, and discussed his time working on Cape Fear. He explained that, at this point in his career, the director is the most important factor when he decides to take on a project. That’s why the opportunity to work with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg on the series was so appealing – he’s eager to collaborate with both of them as a director and actor in the future.
I once spent a day with Steven Spielberg helping him audition children – it’s a complicated story! – and it was an incredible experience. I’d really enjoy working with him on a film. I don’t have a dream role in mind, but I do have a list of directors I admire, and Noah Baumbach was definitely one of them. I don’t often get to do comedy, so this project was a chance to explore that side of acting.
He originally said he had a fantastic time working with Amy Adams and Javier Bardem, but jokingly admitted that ‘fantastic’ wasn’t quite the right word because the show deals with difficult subject matter. Wilson clarified that the new series isn’t a remake of the classic Cape Fear film by Scorsese and Spielberg, but rather a continuation and expansion of the story, drawing from the original novel and 1962 movie. While it’s a completely new take with added and altered characters, he promises it will still stay true to the core elements of the original source material.
Wilson has repeatedly stated that the new Cape Fear series won’t simply be a remake of previous versions. He’s consistently emphasized that the Apple TV+ show aims to build upon the original story, which is necessary because the show’s ten episodes allow for much more detail than the original two-hour films.
This wouldn’t be the first time a film adaptation of John MacDonald’s The Executioners has deviated from the original novel. While the initial movie stayed relatively close to the book, it changed the ending by having the villain, Max Cady, survive and return to prison. Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear was known for being significantly more intense than the 1962 version starring Gregory Peck, and it also altered Cady’s fate from the book’s conclusion.
A key difference between the original Cape Fear and the new Apple TV+ series is that both Tom Bowden and Anna are now lawyers. In the earlier films, Anna didn’t have a defined profession. This change not only gives Anna more independence and power but also complicates her relationship with Tom, as he bends the rules to keep Cady imprisoned, driven by his disapproval of his actions – a detail consistent with the original novel.
The show Cape Fear on Apple TV+ might delve into the strain Cady’s actions put on Tom and Anna’s marriage, potentially showing them disagreeing strongly about how to handle the situation. As hinted by a creator, this could lead to exploring broader conflicts in their values or even more manipulative behavior from Cady, expanding on the original story.
