The upcoming fourth film in Marvel Studios’ Captain America series, titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” is breaking records in an unexpected way as it boasts the shortest runtime among all Captain America movies. In contrast, its three prior films typically feature runtimes more common for contemporary superhero flicks.
In terms of Discussing Film, the runtime for Captain America: Brave New World is 1 hour and 58 minutes, which equals 118 minutes. Contrastingly, the first Captain America film from 2011, The First Avenger, was initially released with a runtime of 124 minutes. Its sequel from 2014, The Winter Soldier, had a runtime of 136 minutes. Lastly, among the four Captain America films, Civil War from 2016 is the longest, boasting a runtime of 147 minutes.
Previously, Anthony Mackie reprised his role as Sam Wilson in the 2021 Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” a continuation of Sam’s journey following the end of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” In that movie, Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans), who had grown older, formally relinquished the role of Captain America after he time-traveled using the Infinity Stones to live a full life he had previously missed out on due to his frozen stasis. The shield made of Vibranium that Steve used was passed onto Sam, his trusted ally. “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” served as an origin story for Sam as Captain America, while “Brave New World” is set to be his first full solo adventure as Captain America.
In the upcoming movie “Brave New World,” Sam finds himself at odds with the newly elected President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, played by Harrison Ford. As you may recall from Captain America: Civil War, Ross previously aimed to have more control over the Avengers through the Sokovia Accords, a role previously filled by William Hurt’s character. The trailers for “Brave New World” suggest that President Ross now wants Sam to work directly for the U.S. government. Similar to Steve Rogers before him, Sam Wilson resists the notion of being a superhero under government control, establishing the central conflict within the movie “Brave New World.
It’s possible that since Sam has already experienced a Captain America origin story in a series format, the movie adaptation of “Brave New World” might be shorter compared to previous Captain America films. With Sam now fully assuming the shield and responsibilities passed on by Steve, it seems they want to kick off his next adventure swiftly. Given that Sam faces a significant challenge with President Ross transforming into the Red Hulk, it’s understandable they’d like to get straight to the action.
In the highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) premiere of General-turned-President Ross as the Red Hulk, Brave New World is set to be a fast-paced and concise MCU journey. Unlike some superhero films that require extended screen time for storytelling, it seems that Marvel Studios and the creators of Brave New World believe that a runtime of slightly under two hours is sufficient for Sam’s initial big-screen outing as Captain America. Interestingly, Sam’s first Captain America movie is merely six minutes shorter than Steve’s, making the runtime of Captain America: Brave New World not a significant reduction, but it does mark a briefness record for the Captain America series in storytelling.
Captain America: Brave New World will be released in theaters on February 14th.
