The live-action Captain Planet remake is moving forward, though not as initially planned.
The TV show Captain Planet and the Planeteers, which aired from September 1990 to its final season, was an animated superhero series that was developed by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner. This popular show focused on environmental protection.
Previously, Leonardo DiCaprio’s company, Appian Way Productions, had been aiming to create a live-action adaptation of Captain Planet. This project was intended for Paramount Pictures and was being jointly written by Glen Powell and Jono Matt.
By the stipulated deadline, the rights for Captain Planet were returned to Warner Bros. Discovery; however, “Powell continued to harbor a deep interest in it as his fame soared swiftly following Top Gun: Maverick.
What is happening with the live-action Captain Planet remake?
Instead of becoming a feature film, the revamped version of Captain Planet and the Planeteers will now take form as a live-action series, specifically designed for streaming on Netflix.
The series is produced by Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, Appian Way, and Warner Bros. Television. Tara Hernandez takes on the role of scriptwriter, while DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman serve as executive producers.
Powell is no longer involved with the project; however, Matt still serves as a producer.
The article from Deadline explains that Captain Planet and the Planeteers is about five teenagers who work together to solve environmental crises with the aid of a superhero named Captain Planet. The series was created by DIC Enterprises for seasons 1-3, then Hanna-Barbera Cartoons took over for seasons 4-6. Berlanti has experience in the superhero genre as he constructed a large DC universe on the CW. This is the second high-profile live-action adaptation of a popular WBD animated series for Netflix under the banner of Berlanti Productions, following the upcoming Scooby-Doo origin series. At Netflix, they also produced the hit thriller drama series You, which was co-created by Berlanti.
At the moment, there’s no info on the storyline, characters, or premiere date for Netflix’s live-action version of Captain Planet.
