Carla’s Reduced Role in the ‘Scrubs’ Revival Allows Turk & Elliot’s Friendship To Shine

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the Scrubs revival, specifically Episode 6, “My VIP.” While many of the original Scrubs cast members have returned for the show’s revival, the reunions have been infrequent. Considering the new episodes are trying to recreate the magic of the original series, this limited involvement from past stars could be seen as a problem. However, Episode 6, “My VIP,” demonstrates how the show can actually benefit from certain characters not being present.

Zach Braff (as JD), Donald Faison (as Turk), and Sarah Chalke (as Elliot) are the only original cast members who have been consistently in the new Scrubs series. While other familiar faces have popped up now and then, some original stars aren’t appearing at all. The show has managed to handle these absences well, especially with its new group of interns, who have been a great addition. However, it’s hard not to notice that one returning character hasn’t been featured consistently.

Why Judy Reyes’ Nurse Carla Espinosa Has Hardly Been in the ‘Scrubs’ Revival

Carla was a hugely important character on the original Scrubs series. She helped JD adjust when he first started at Sacred Heart, and she became Turk’s wife. Plus, the hospital really relied on her to keep things running smoothly. So, it was great to see Judy Reyes return for the revival! She appeared in the episode “My Return” to welcome JD back, but so far has only been in one episode. Now, with “My VIP” (Episode 6), it marks the third episode in a row where Carla’s been mentioned or hinted at, but hasn’t actually appeared on screen.

The reason we’re seeing Carla Reyes appear only occasionally in the new season of Scrubs is due to her demanding schedule. She’s a regular on High Potential, which has been renewed for a third season, forcing her to balance both shows. While it’s not ideal, the show creators felt it was better to have her appear sometimes than not at all. John C. McGinley also has a reduced role due to his own commitments, but his character’s departure was written into the show, making it less noticeable. However, Carla’s limited presence feels a bit disjointed in the revival’s storyline.

Carla’s Absence in “My VIP” Actually Made the Episode Better

The way Carla is featured in the Scrubs revival isn’t quite what the writers originally intended. If actress Reyes hadn’t been busy with other projects, Carla would have likely had a much bigger role. While I would have enjoyed seeing more of her, the sixth episode actually benefited from her absence. Had she been in it, she probably would have overshadowed Turk’s storyline. Carla tends to be a bit of a control freak when it comes to giving relationship advice, and she’s also Elliot’s closest friend.

Initially, it seemed natural for Reyes to investigate Elliot’s new boyfriend and uncover any secrets from his past. However, due to Reyes being busy, Turk took on the task, and it went perfectly. Though Turk and Elliot didn’t often share storylines in the original run of Scrubs, the show always portrayed them as close friends. The episode “My VIP” really highlighted their bond, with Turk going the extra mile to make Elliot happy. It’s a sweet and often overlooked pairing, especially considering they’ve been working together on-screen for over 17 years since the show’s finale in 2009.

Will Carla Return Before the ‘Scrubs’ Revival Ends?

Yes, Carla Reyes will appear in four episodes of the Scrubs revival. She’s already been in two, with two more to come. It’s likely she’ll be in the finale, and with Daniel McGinley returning as Dr. Cox in episode eight, that seems like another good possibility. So, we can expect to see Reyes in both episode eight and the finale, completing her four-episode arc for this season.

Beyond the season finale, it’s still unknown if ABC will order more episodes of the Scrubs revival. Considering the positive response to the new season, continuing the show would be a logical step. If it does continue, Judy Reyes is likely to return. However, her availability for a full season is less certain. Her other show, High Potential, is doing well, but filming for season three hasn’t been scheduled yet. This could mean there won’t be much conflict with a potential new season of Scrubs, potentially allowing for a significant return of her character, Carla.
