Director Jaume Collet-Serra is set to join the cast of “Carry-On 2“, a Netflix thriller that has made history as the streaming service’s most successful film debut in 2024. Starring Taron Egerton, who won a Golden Globe for his role in “Rocketman”, as Ethan Kopek, a TSA agent coerced by a secret traveler (Jason Bateman) to let a lethal package pass through airport security, the movie garnered record-breaking viewership when it was released on Dec. 13. Within its first week, “Carry-On” became the most-watched title and ranked in the Netflix Top 10 in 93 countries with nearly 100 million views. In January, it even climbed to the fifth spot among the most popular English-language movies of all time.
Although the series has achieved impressive viewership and received praise from critics, Collet-Serra shares that there are currently no intentions to produce a follow-up.
The director shared with Variety that they currently have no intentions for a follow-up film. However, should the audience express interest, and if our creative team came up with a concept fitting of the original, we might consider it. At this moment, though, there’s nothing in the works.
Producer Dylan Clark, known for movies like “The Batman” and the popular series “Bird Box”, mentioned that as of now, there are no definite plans, but it’s intriguing to discuss such possibilities. The characters are captivating, particularly Danielle Deadwyler’s role as Detective Elena Cole. There could potentially be a film centered around her character.
The director behind “Jungle Cruise” and “Black Adam” finds it gratifying that Carry-On is doing well on Netflix’s rankings. However, what truly excites him isn’t just the numbers; it’s observing the public’s responses to the film itself.
As a film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but notice an influx of calls and messages pouring in from friends and strangers alike, once they found out that I was the one behind the camera for this movie. It turns out they didn’t know about my directorial role until they spotted my name in the credits, and then the texts started coming in, expressing their admiration for the film. In that moment, I could sense that our movie was resonating with audiences and making a connection.
The film, an edge-of-your-seat thriller set in an airport, boasts a stellar cast including Julianne Hough (known for her roles in Kingsman movies), Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sofia Carson (Purple Hearts), Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall), Logan Marshall-Green (Upgrade), Theo Rossi (The Penguin), and Dean Norris (Breaking Bad). As of now, the movie has garnered an impressive 149.4 million views with a staggering 298.7 million hours watched on Netflix.
Currently, “Carry-On” ranks fifth among the most-watched Netflix original movies worldwide. Only four other titles – “Red Notice” (2021), “Don’t Look Up” (2021), “The Adam Project” (2022), and “Bird Box” (2018) – have more views on the global list. In comparison, it surpasses “Leave the World Behind” (2023) at No. 6, “The Gray Man” (2022) at No. 7, “Damsel” (2024), “We Can Be Heroes” (2020), and “The Mother” (2023) which are all ranked below it.
Dan Lin, Chair of Netflix Film, shared with Variety that “Carry-On” harks back to the iconic action flicks from the ’80s and ’90s we all cherish. He was ecstatic about creating this movie as a tribute to the genre’s finest. The audience response has been fantastic, and it’s heartening to see the film among Netflix’s most-watched ever. Kudos to Jaume, Dylan, Amblin Entertainment, and the entire cast and crew for their excellent work!
Carry-On is now streaming exclusively on Netlix.
