Recently, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding HBO Max, and unfortunately, not all of it has been positive. Most recently, the streaming service parted ways with two popular Cartoon Network shows – “Courage The Cowardly Dog” and “What’s New, Scooby Doo.” Previously, the timing of series and movies leaving HBO Max seemed to coincide with their license expiration dates. However, it appears that some fan-favorites have been granted a reprieve. A number of Cartoon Network shows, including those from Adult Swim, have reportedly been given more time on the platform.
This year, several Cartoon Network series like “The Powerpuff Girls” and “New Looney Tunes,” along with many others, have ended their run on HBO Max because their licenses expired. Some might find a new home on platforms such as Netflix or Hulu, but there’s a possibility that others won’t be available on any streaming service. Fortunately, the popular Cartoon Network show “Adventure Time” has been given an extension on HBO Max, with its expiration date moved from October 2021 to October 2026. Additionally, fan-favorite shows from Adult Swim, such as “Harvey Birdman,” “Moral Orel,” and “Black Dynamite,” have also been renewed and will continue airing until September 2023.
What’s Leaving HBO Max?
These shows such as “Adventure Time”, “Black Dynamite”, “Harvey Birdman” and “Moral Orel” are fortunate to continue, but unfortunately, others like them must say goodbye. With “What’s New, Scooby Doo” leaving HBO Max, the original “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!” series will part ways this fall. On the Adult Swim side, shows including “The Brak Show”, “Superjail” and “Sealab 2021” haven’t been granted a second chance like their counterparts on Cartoon Network.
From my vantage point, it seems that Cartoon Network’s studio continues to produce fresh animated content for enthusiasts, yet not all of its original shows are currently available on HBO Max. At present, there are only eleven Cartoon Network originals, exclusive of Adult Swim productions, still streaming. The roster includes titles such as Adventure Time, Craig Before The Creek, Craig of the Creek, Lamput, LU & The Bally Bunch (Mini-Series), LU & The Bally Bunch (Full Series), Total Drama Island, Total Dramarama, Total Dramarama: A Very Special Special That’s Quite Special, Villainous, and We Baby Bears: Atlantis Bound. Here’s hoping that these animated treasures will continue to thrive on HBO Max, as the platform was once a bustling hub for animation, but seems to be dwindling in this area with each passing year.
