It’s been eleven years since the enchanting, yet unsettling journey of Greg and Wirt through the Unknown captivated audiences on Cartoon Network in the now-classic series, Over the Garden Wall. Though fans have enjoyed comics that expanded on the brothers’ story, a new series continuing the tale was never confirmed. Fortunately, Warner Bros. hasn’t forgotten about the show! After nearly a decade since it originally aired, Over the Garden Wall is finally getting something many devoted fans have eagerly awaited.
Fans of the Cartoon Network series Over the Garden Wall have a reason to celebrate! Barnes & Noble has announced that the show will be released on Blu-Ray for the first time ever on April 7th. The Blu-Ray will cost $30.99. While the series is available on Hulu and DVD, many fans thought a Blu-Ray release would never happen. Thankfully, just like the characters Greg and Wirt finding their way home, it was only a matter of time!
Beyond the Garden Wall
Fans still love Over the Garden Wall, even eleven years after it first aired on Cartoon Network. Recently, fans created a new animated segment as part of the “ReAnimated” project, bringing the world of the Unknown back to life. The series is also seeing a resurgence with Mondo releasing a new line of figures featuring its unique characters.
To mark the tenth anniversary of the show, Over the Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale made a special stop-motion scene that revisited the story. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McHale described the series as being about a place called The Unknown, which he envisioned as a collection of forgotten stories and people. He also wanted the music to feel similarly timeless, hoping to introduce younger viewers to songs they might not otherwise encounter. His idea was that presenting classic music within a fun cartoon would make it more appealing and accessible, rather than seeming strange or outdated.
Patrick was pleased to hear that many people connected with the relationship between Wirt and Greg, especially those who have siblings. He said it was rewarding to hear from viewers who saw their own sibling dynamics reflected in the characters. As an only child himself, Patrick drew on observations and memories of his own childhood and teenage years to create their believable connection, hoping it would resonate with audiences.
