Casualty new series boxset confirms Ngozi Okoye’s fate after relapse in BBC iPlayer release

Last year’s season of Casualty ended with a shocking scene: Adesuwa Oni, played by Ngozi Okoye, suffered a head injury following a return to drinking at the airport.

The nurse was returning to Nigeria with her son, Obi (played by Aryel Tsoto), who was having a difficult time adjusting to life and school in the UK. She had also recently broken up with Dr. Nicole Piper (Sammy T Dobson) after Dr. Piper learned about her addiction.

It turned out Nicole had a difficult childhood, and she couldn’t face repeating that experience with Ngozi.

Ngozi’s life was about to change drastically as she prepared to return to West Africa, where she feared she wouldn’t be able to freely express her sexuality. While waiting at the airport bar, she started drinking a lot, and collapsed just before her flight was scheduled to depart.

Watching the first episode of the new season, it was really clear Nicole is still deeply hurting over what happened. You could see her grief everywhere she went in the hospital – she just seemed lost in her sadness.

Like most days at Holby City General Hospital, things were extra hectic due to unexpected issues.

It was the hottest day of the year – a strange contrast to the snowy weather across the UK that week. Dylan Keogh (William Beck) was increasingly worried that Matty Linlaker (Aron Julius), a new doctor, might be his son.

The new doctor quickly made an impact in the emergency department, causing some friction with Jodie Whyte and Flynn Byron. Stevie Nash, determined to understand his possible connection to Dylan, directly asked him about his mother, and it appeared her suspicions were correct – they are indeed connected.

Kim Chang (Jasmine Bayes), a new arrival, was quickly learning the ropes in the busy emergency room. She’d been given a locker that used to belong to Ngozi, which made Nicole think about her past relationship.

Kim thought revealing she’d installed a mirror in her ex’s locker meant she’d been fired – that’s why she believed she no longer had a job there.

Surprisingly, we soon discovered Ngozi wasn’t dead after all. Kim brought her name up and seemed to suggest she had passed away, which confused Nicole. Just then, Ngozi called to say she was doing well at a rehabilitation center.

Things are looking much better, and it feels like Ngozi and Nicole might actually have a chance at recovery, leaving us hopeful for their future.

Casualty airs Saturday evenings BBC One or can be streamed from 6am on iPlayer.
