As a devoted fan of the Catan board game series and someone who has spent countless hours strategizing, negotiating, and celebrating victories with friends around the iconic hexagonal tiles, I am thrilled beyond words to learn about Klaus Teuber‘s upcoming novel! The idea of delving deeper into the rich history and lore of Catan is a dream come true for me.

As a long-time fan of Settlers of Catan, I am thrilled to hear that Klaus Teuber’s novel about the world of Catan is finally getting an English translation this year. Having played the game countless times and imagined the stories behind the characters, I can’t wait to delve deeper into the rich history of the fictional island and its inhabitants. The story of three Nordic brothers fleeing their home and embarking on a perilous journey to Catan is sure to be an adventure filled with drama, suspense, and intrigue. As someone who has always been captivated by tales of exploration and settlement, I am excited to see how Teuber brings this world to life through his words. This novel promises to be a must-read for fans of the game and anyone who loves a good story set in a fantastical world.

The book delves into the origins of the widely acclaimed Catan series of board games, a game that has achieved immense popularity worldwide. As of 2023, over 40 million sets of Catan and its numerous extensions have been printed, each addition or new game introducing unique elements to the original blend of teamwork and rivalry in gameplay.

In an interview with ComicBook last year, Guido Teuber, son of Klaus Teuber, discussed the origin of his father’s novels and games. “My dad,” Guido explained, “would often come up with game ideas while daydreaming on the train.” He continued, “The stories he wanted to tell would eventually take shape as a game design. So, all of his game concepts were birthed from a story, whether it was Barbarossa, his first game of the year, or CATAN.” Guido revealed that the inspiration for CATAN came from Vikings, specifically those who ventured to Iceland and were more focused on trading and farming rather than raiding.

Guido Teuber shared that his father was a passionate reader who influenced his game design, and he had numerous ideas and projects he wished to bring to life, but unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance. Some elements of the games, like The Helpers expansion, were later incorporated into novels.

Klaus Teuber’s “CATAN” novel is set to hit shelves on October 1st. You can get a sneak peek at the book right over here.
