Despite all the advancements in gaming, many modern games feel like something is missing. Looking back at older consoles, like the PlayStation 2, it’s clear that games once had a unique charm that seems to have been lost. The focus on incredibly realistic graphics has led to a move away from the imaginative and stylized visuals common in that era, which is disappointing. This shift has not only made games look more similar to each other, but it’s also made it harder for video games to develop their own recognizable artistic style.

It’s common for fantastic games not to get sequels, and there are usually clear reasons why – like disappointing sales even with good reviews, changes within the game company, or losing the rights to make more games. However, that wasn’t the case with a potential sequel to Black. The developers definitely wanted to make one and had even started working on it. Sadly, disagreements about the game’s direction – the classic issue of ‘creative differences’ – ultimately stopped the project. While fans were disappointed, a similar game called Bodycount came out in 2011, but it wasn’t a true continuation of the Black story.

Core Keeper, a surprisingly excellent survival game, first launched in Early Access in 2022 and officially released in 2024. While it’s been consistently popular, especially after coming to consoles, it hasn’t gotten quite the attention it deserves for a well-made, open-world survival game that lets up to eight players team up. Recently, the game is gaining popularity again thanks to the new Void & Voltage update – and it’s a welcome boost for a truly great title.
