I was really blown away by The Testament of Ann Lee! Amanda Seyfried is incredible in the lead role, and director Robert Eggers has brought together a fantastic cast – Lewis Pullman plays her brother William, and you’ll also recognize Christopher Abbott as her husband, Abraham. Thomasin McKenzie, Stacy Martin, and Tim Blake Nelson are all in it too. It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and everyone is raving about it, especially Seyfried’s performance – it’s so intense and feels really real. Plus, the movie features some beautiful musical numbers! Right now, it has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so I’m really excited for everyone to see it.

As a huge DC fan, it’s clear to me that the mixed reaction to the Green Lantern movie really held back those characters for a long time, and honestly, it impacted DC’s live-action plans for the whole group. But it seems like the folks behind the new DCU are paying attention to what didn’t work with Green Lantern and are trying a different approach this time around. They definitely seem to have learned from past mistakes when it comes to how they’re presenting these heroes and their stories.

After helping the Romans crush the slave revolt led by Spartacus, the character in Spartacus: House of Ashur begins training a new group of gladiators. A key focus is on Achillia, played by Tenika Davis, who is the first female gladiator in the series. Meanwhile, he also has to deal with the complex world of Roman politics, including the growing power of Julius Caesar and his wife, Cornelia.

As a huge fan of pirate stories, I’ve been loving seeing the buzz around Black Sails lately. You can find it to buy digitally on Apple (formerly iTunes) and other streaming services, but it’s really taken off on Apple – it’s currently the second most popular TV show there, only behind Cowboy Bebop! It originally aired on Starz back in 2014 and ran for four seasons. What’s so cool about Black Sails is that it’s a prequel to Treasure Island – it follows Captain Flint as he struggles to protect New Providence Island when the British Navy declares all pirates enemies. It’s loosely based on real history, which makes it even more engaging. Here’s what the show is all about, according to the official description:

Marvel Studios has been making big announcements about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. The Russo Brothers are back as directors, and Robert Downey Jr. will surprisingly play Doctor Doom! We’ll also see familiar characters from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the X-Men films. The movie’s marketing is different – Marvel is releasing short teasers focusing on individual characters. The first teaser confirmed Chris Evans will return as Steve Rogers, along with other previously announced cast members. Most recently, new footage revealed details about Thor’s role that fans will be excited to see.
