Catherine O’Hara Battled “Brief Illness” Before Her Death

New details have come to light about Catherine O’Hara’s final days.

Following a short illness, actress Annie Mulaire, known for her role in Schitt’s Creek, passed away at her home on January 30th at the age of 71. Her agency, Creative Artists Agency, confirmed the news to Us Weekly.

Catherine is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew, 32, and Luke, 28. Details regarding her illness and cause of death were not released.

The actress, known for her work in Studio, also missed the Golden Globes earlier this month. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series for her performance as Patty Leigh in the show produced by Seth Rogen.

Although Catherine didn’t comment on why she missed the event, she had previously been open about her health. She revealed she has a rare condition called cardiac inversus, also known as dextrocardia with situs inversus. This means her heart and other organs are positioned on the opposite side of her body compared to most people – essentially a mirror image.

In a 2021 interview, Catherine jokingly referred to herself as ‘a freak’ after discovering she had a medical condition. She and her husband had initially hesitated, but went to the doctor for tuberculosis testing before their son began nursery school. While she appreciates modern medicine, she expressed a desire to avoid becoming overly involved with the healthcare system.

Even though she struggled with health problems, the Emmy-winning actress usually prioritized her work and finding ways to bring joy to others.

Catherine recently told Variety that having a strong survival instinct is invaluable. “If you grow up with that, you’re incredibly fortunate,” she said. “It’s a wonderful gift, because life always has its ups and downs.”

“You have to find the joy in things,” she said. Growing up, my parents were hilarious, and we always valued humor. Our family really encouraged everyone to laugh and be silly.”

And while she will be remembered as a titan of comedy, it’s not a title Catherine used for herself.

“I don’t think of myself like that,” she shared, “but it’s nice that others do.”

Her Home Alone co-star, Macaulay Culkin, shared a touching and sad message about her, simply writing, “Mama. I thought we had time.”

He went on, saying he wished he could have been closer, sitting right beside her. He’d heard her, but had so much left unsaid. “I love you,” he finished, “and I’ll see you soon.”

This goes all the way back to before the first Beetlejuice movie. She’s been like a wife to me in my imagination, a playful rival, and a genuinely wonderful friend in real life. I’m really heartbroken. I’m going to miss her terribly, and I’m also thinking of Beau.

Mom, I didn’t realize time was so short. I still had so much I wanted to share with you, like just sitting with you and talking. I told you I loved you, and I’ll see you again someday.

Honestly, I’m absolutely devastated. Catherine O’Hara wasn’t just a great actress, she was magic. There will never be anyone like her, and the news just… it feels like a huge piece of joy has gone out of the world. I can’t even begin to explain how much she meant to me.

She was more than just a famous artist, actor, and comedian. She truly represented the best of Canada – incredibly talented, brave, uniquely herself, and full of warmth. She not only made people laugh, but also helped them feel understood.

As an artist, she was a huge inspiration to me. She showed me what it means to represent your country with both skill and kindness, always remaining warm and humble.

I’m deeply saddened for her family, friends, and all who loved her, here in Canada and internationally.

It’s okay to feel sad right now, and please know that you’re not the only one who’s hurting. We’re all sharing in this loss. Rest peacefully, Catherine, and thank you for all you did.

I’m so thankful I had the chance to tell her how much she meant to me – how she inspired me, influenced my sense of humor, and helped me understand our work. I always considered her the best of the best, and I’m sure many actors felt the same. What was remarkable was that she never seemed jaded; she listened with genuine kindness and a wonderful sense of humor. I want to thank Jason Reitman for letting me participate in the Film Independent LACMA reading where I got to work with and witness her brilliance firsthand. Being around her and watching her work was incredible, and I’ll cherish those moments forever. Both that day and on the set of Away We Go, she was exceptionally kind to everyone, from the director to the production assistants. She truly lit up a room with her presence – she was radiant and almost otherworldly. Her talent was unique; there’s never been anyone like her, and there never will be. She was a true genius and a beautiful person.

Catherine was an extraordinary person – kind, honest, intelligent, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was strikingly beautiful, both inside and out, and possessed a remarkable spirit. Her work radiated her deep love for people, and she was uniquely treasured for her integrity, clear thinking, and wisdom. It’s easy to imagine her now with other great minds, sharing her incredible insights. Here on Earth, we’re heartbroken by her loss and will miss her dearly, especially in these times. Rest peacefully, dear friend.

Catherine O’Hara was a truly genuine and honest person, both in her work and in her personal life. Her authenticity touched everyone who knew her and extended to her beloved family, Bo, Luke, and Matthew. We offer our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. May she rest peacefully, and may her memory live on forever.

“Catherine O’Hara. The absolute greatest. Only 71. An angel. The funniest. This is shocking.”

I truly never imagined I’d have the chance to work with Catherine O’Hara, and I certainly never expected to become friends with her. I’m heartbroken that she’s gone, but so thankful for the time we shared. Thank you, Catherine. I’ll always love you.

“Oh Catherine. You will be so so missed.”

“She was an all-timer. Her memory and work is a blessing. Rest peacefully.”

Being near you was a gift, and I’m endlessly thankful. The world feels a little dimmer now that you’re gone, but this fortunate world will always remember you. Forever and always, you were one of a kind. #CatherineOHara

This is devastating news. She was a truly wonderful person, a gifted artist, and a joy to work with. I feel so fortunate to have directed, produced, and acted alongside her – she just kept getting better and better. My deepest sympathies go to Bo and her family.

“Absolutely heartbreaking. She was the kindest person in our business.”

Francesca was speechless after seeing her dad’s reaction on FaceTime, sharing a photo and saying she was completely heartbroken and in shock.

It’s a huge loss. She was incredibly talented, graceful, and down-to-earth – a natural performer who brought so much happiness to everyone. She will be greatly missed and inspired countless comedians and performers with her effortless brilliance every time she appeared on screen.

“BEST OF THE BEST IN SHOW!”

“Legend.”

“Ugggg legend. No one funnier.”

“Nooo my most profound condolences.”

She was truly inspiring, bringing a joyful energy to her comedy that touched everyone who watched her. May she rest in peace.
