Catherine O’Hara’s Brother Details Final Days Before Her Death

Catherine O’Hara’s family is reflecting on her last moments.

Michael P. O’Hara says he believes a striking dream he had about his sister, the actress from Schitt’s Creek, was a final goodbye before she passed away in January.

Michael shared on his April 6th podcast, Tip O The Iceberg, that he deeply values moments when he connects with loved ones in his dreams. He described a recent dream where he hugged someone, calling it a beautiful experience that felt like a farewell.

Michael felt the dream was a final farewell from Catherine, who had passed away at 71 from a blood clot in her lung, as she hadn’t been very communicative near the end of her life.

He said that she wasn’t much of a phone person back then, and since she lived in Los Angeles, it wasn’t easy to connect with her.

Following Catherine’s sudden and heartbreaking death, the screenwriter revealed that he’s had dreams visited by the former Home Alone star multiple times.

He shared that he recently had a pleasant dream about visiting her. In the dream, she was in a new home undergoing renovations, actively picking out furniture and couches. She told him, ‘Michael, you’re welcome to sleep here whenever you want. Come over and stay anytime.’

He continued, recalling when she was on Second City Television and he was an apprentice at the Windsor Arms Hotel. He’d sometimes stay at her place, as she had a spare room. He thought it was a wonderful time, and she seemed incredibly happy and immersed in her work, even then, in the world she now inhabits.

Michael shared that he finds comfort in dreaming about loved ones who have passed away, and even though Catherine is gone, he will always remember her.

He explained that we’re all connected, and love lasts forever, even after someone is gone. He felt they remain with us always.

Oh my goodness, getting to work alongside Catherine O’Hara for so long felt like a dream! After fifty years of watching my dad work with her, she truly felt like family – even before she played my on-screen family. I honestly can’t even picture a world without her incredible energy. I’m so, so lucky to have all those hilarious memories, and I’ll treasure them forever. Sending all my love and deepest sympathy to Bo, Matthew, Luke, and her whole wonderful family. It’s just… heartbreaking.

This goes way back, even before the first Beetlejuice movie. She’s been like a wife in my imagination, a playful rival, and a genuinely wonderful friend in real life. I’m really heartbroken. I’m going to miss her terribly, and I’m also thinking of Beau.

Mom, I didn’t realize time was running out. I wished I could have spent more time with you, just sitting beside you and talking. I had so much left to tell you, even though I said I love you. I’ll see you again someday.

I’m truly at a loss for words. From the moment I met O’Hara, I thought she was one of the funniest people I’d ever seen. Home Alone actually inspired me to become a filmmaker, so working with her was a real privilege. She was hilarious, kind, insightful, and incredibly generous. She motivated me to make our show the best it could be, worthy of her talent. This is a terrible loss, and we were all so fortunate to have her in our lives.

“Catherine, I love you… You were a special part of my life and after life.”

I’m absolutely devastated to hear about Catherine O’Hara. She was truly one of a kind – a uniquely brilliant and radiant performer. It’s hard to express just how much her loss feels like a weight on my heart. She was a rare talent, and the world feels a little dimmer without her light.

She was more than just a famous performer – a truly remarkable artist, actor, and comedian. She represented the best of Canada, being incredibly talented, brave, uniquely herself, and deeply compassionate. She not only brought joy to the world but also helped people feel understood.

As an artist, she was a huge inspiration to me. She showed me what it means to represent your country with skill, elegance, and a genuine, humble spirit.

I’m deeply saddened for her family, friends, and all who loved her, not only in Canada but everywhere.

If you’re feeling sad about this loss, please know that you’re not the only one. We’re all sharing in this grief. Rest peacefully, Catherine, and thank you for all you’ve done.

I’m so thankful I had the chance to tell her how much she meant to me – she inspired me, influenced my sense of humor, and helped me understand our work. I always thought of her as the very best. I’m sure everyone who met her said similar things, but she never seemed tired of hearing it. She listened with kindness, grace, and a wonderful sense of humor. I want to thank Jason Reitman for letting me participate in the Film Independent LACMA reading, where I got to work with and witness the brilliance of someone I truly admired. It was amazing to watch her work and just be around her – I’ll cherish those moments forever. Both during that reading and on the set of Away We Go, she was incredibly kind to everyone, from the director to the production assistants. She truly lit up a room – she was radiant and seemed almost otherworldly. Her talent was one of a kind. There will never be anyone like her again. She was a true genius and a beautiful soul.

Catherine was an extraordinary person – kind, honest, intelligent, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was strikingly beautiful, full of life, and deeply cared about people, which shone through in everything she did. She possessed rare wisdom, clarity, and integrity, making her truly special. It feels like she’s already sharing her incredible insights with other great minds. Her loss leaves a hole in our hearts, especially now when we needed her so much. May she rest in peace, dear friend.

Honestly, I’m still reeling from this news. It feels so unreal to accept she’s gone, and it’s just a deeply painful time. It’s incredibly hard to say goodbye to someone who was so vibrant and clearly had so much more life to live. She brought so much joy to all of us – those laughs were unforgettable, and that’s why we’re all feeling this loss so intensely. Rest in peace, you were a true icon.
