CBS’ 7-Part Sherlock Holmes Crime Series Returns as a Global Digital Hit 7 Years Later

I’m so thrilled to see a truly cherished adaptation is suddenly everywhere online! It’s amazing, especially considering it originally wrapped up its incredible run seven years ago.

According to FlixPatrol, the series Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, recently became the most popular show available for rent or purchase on the Apple TV Store worldwide on May 10th, though it fell to third place by the next day. Over the past week, Elementary has also appeared in the top ten lists of seven different countries, across platforms like Paramount+ and Prime Video – including Italy, where it ranked among the top ten on both streaming services.

What Was CBS’ Elementary — And Why Did Critics and Audiences Love It So Much?

Created by Robert Doherty, Elementary first aired on CBS in 2012. The show presented a new take on Sherlock Holmes, played by Jonny Lee Miller, and featured Joan Watson, a former surgeon who becomes Holmes’s companion and trusted assistant.

The main cast of Elementary, alongside Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, featured Jon Michael Hill as Detective (and later Captain) Marcus Bell, Ophelia Lovibond as Kitty Winter, Ato Essandoh as Alfredo Llamosa, Rhys Ifans as Mycroft Holmes, and Natalie Dormer as Irene Adler, who also went by the name Jamie Moriarty. As the show went on, several actors joined the core group, including Nelsan Ellis, John Noble, Desmond Harrington, and James Frain.

During its seven seasons, the TV show Elementary produced an impressive 154 episodes. The show was also very well-received, with five of its seasons earning a perfect 100% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, the series has a 96% “Fresh” rating, and an 89% audience score on the site.

Where Can Fans Still See Sherlock Holmes on the Small Screen?

Even though Elementary ended in 2019 and Watson, with Morris Chestnut, was canceled in March, Sherlock Holmes fans still have plenty of options for new adventures. [Name of show] is proving popular and will be back for a second season after its successful first season premiered in April 2025.

The series Young Sherlock, created by Peter Harness and Guy Ritchie, launched on Prime Video in March and was very well received. Currently, Season 1 has an 84% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is nearly the same as its 83% audience score (“Popcornmeter”).

Both Sherlock & Daughter and Young Sherlock are enjoyable shows, but they offer very different experiences. Sherlock & Daughter follows Amelia Rojas as she tries to connect with the famous detective who may be her father, set during his complex friendship with James Moriarty.
