CBS’s 5-Season Paranormal Masterpiece Is So Good, It’s A Shame It Can’t Continue Forever

Even though a paranormal show did well for five seasons on CBS, it can’t last forever. Traditional network TV is often overshadowed by the growing number of shows available on streaming services. While crime, medical, and legal dramas are popular, comedies also consistently perform well on television.

CBS has a long and successful tradition of creating popular sitcoms. They’ve given us beloved classics like I Love Lucy, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and All In The Family, as well as more recent hits such as How I Met Your Mother, Everybody Loves Raymond, and The Big Bang Theory. Today, CBS continues to offer top comedies, including Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and The Neighborhood. Among these shows, Ghosts stands out as a critical and commercial success.

Ghosts Is The Most Unique Comedy On TV

After years of similar comedies on television, Ghosts, which debuted in 2021, felt like something new. Created by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, and based on a British show of the same name, the series follows a married couple, Sam and Jay, who share their home with a group of ghosts. Sam can see and talk to the ghosts, but Jay can’t, leading to many funny situations.

Most sitcoms these days focus on realistic, everyday life or workplaces, but Ghosts stands out by blending the genre with supernatural themes. What’s remarkable is how well it balances those elements, attracting viewers who don’t typically enjoy horror. Its quality is clear – Ghosts earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is also one of the most popular scripted shows on television.

Why Ghosts Can’t Go On Forever Despite Its Success

CBS considers Ghosts an important show for its lineup. While it’s been both popular with viewers and well-received by critics, it can’t continue indefinitely. A key part of the show revolves around an agreement Sam made with the ghosts: she helps them resolve their unfinished business so they can finally move on to the afterlife – which the show portrays as escaping their stuck state.

Despite lasting five seasons with the same core cast, Ghosts will eventually need to say goodbye to some of its characters to keep the story strong. If everyone stayed forever, the show could lose its impact and viewers might tune out. While it’s fun to imagine Sam and Jay living in Woodstone Mansion for many years, Ghosts should ultimately follow through on its initial premise and give the spirits the closure they deserve, bringing the series to a satisfying conclusion.

Ghosts is available to stream on Paramount+.
