Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 7 of Marshals, titled “Out of the Shadows.” The latest episode of Marshals marks a turning point for the series, allowing it to move beyond the storylines of Yellowstone. Picking up a year after the conclusion of Yellowstone on Paramount Network, Marshals – starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton – was created as a continuation of the Yellowstone universe. While debuting as part of the 2025-2026 television season and promoted as a new chapter in the Yellowstone story, Marshals quickly establishes itself as a distinct show.
Okay, so instead of continuing the ranch drama with the Duttons and all the Montana politics, this new show, Marshals, is more of a straight-up police procedural within the Yellowstone universe. But don’t worry, it’s still connected! What’s happening in Yellowstone definitely impacts Kayce’s story here. Especially Monica’s death – that was a huge catalyst for this new direction. Now that we’ve dealt with the fallout from ‘Out of the Shadows,’ Marshals can really forge its own path.
Monica’s Memorial Allows Kayce To Finally Move Forward In Marshals
Monica’s death has been a heavy topic throughout the events of Marshals. Losing his wife is what led Kayce to leave his peaceful life at East Camp and become a U.S. Marshal, taking on a dangerous new job. The show hasn’t dedicated an entire episode to exploring what happened to Tate’s mother, instead revealing details about her death gradually each week. Episode 7 of Marshals marks the one-year anniversary of Monica’s death.
This week’s episode of “Out of the Shadows” picks up where the last one left off, with the marshals still searching for the missing girls. Kayce’s choices in the case cause tension with others, particularly Tate. Ultimately, the team rescues the girls just in time for Monica’s memorial service. At the service, Kayce finds the strength to let go of his wife’s necklace, which he’s kept since her passing.
This moment shows Kayce beginning to heal and stop simply going through the motions. Monica embodies the possibility of happiness that remains for him, even after everything he’s lost. While he’ll always grieve for his late wife, this is a turning point where he actively chooses to embrace his present life and move forward.
Kayce Letting Go Of The Past Paves The Way For Marshals To Establish Its Own Identity
It’s natural that the history of the Dutton family and the events of Yellowstone will be mentioned in Marshals, since it’s part of the same universe. This will highlight how the shows connect and make both series more enjoyable for dedicated fans.
While Monica’s memorial is touching, it also cleverly lets the show move past her death and concentrate on new storylines. Though she won’t be entirely forgotten, focusing on other characters and plots helps the series define itself and stand on its own.
Though still early in its first season, Marshals is now able to concentrate on developing its central storyline, which will be key to the show’s future. While the series will eventually tie up loose ends from Yellowstone, its immediate goal should be to stand on its own. Kayce beginning to move past his grief is a positive step in that direction.
