Celebrity Race Across the World airs Roman Kemp candidly speaking about his mental health struggles and coming off antidepressants

Roman Kemp shared openly about his difficulties with mental health while talking with his sister, Harleymoon, on the recent episode of Celebrity Race Across the World.

The race continued tonight, with teams leaving El Salvador and traveling to their next destination: the historic mountain town of Valle de Angeles, Honduras. This marked the start of their journey to the third checkpoint.

Roman and Harleymoon Kemp, a brother and sister team, paused during their travels. While stopping at a beach bar, Roman expressed his amazement that Harleymoon could stay so positive and cheerful, even while competing in the race and needing to find accommodation.

Harleymoon shared that she makes a conscious effort to focus on happiness, and Roman confessed he admired that quality in her.

He explained to Harleymoon that she naturally seemed happy, as if she was born with a high baseline level of joy. He felt his own capacity for happiness was much lower in comparison.

“Even with my tablets I can’t fully get there [higher gesture], do you get what I mean?”

I was really moved when Roman recently opened up about his mental health. He shared that he’s been taking antidepressants for almost half his life, and it was incredibly brave of him to talk about it.

He’s been taking antidepressants for more than 15 years and finds they really help him. He believes what works varies from person to person – some benefit from therapy, others from simply socializing with friends, like going to the pub. There’s no single solution that works for everyone.

I’ve had a really tough time lately, but I’m feeling much better now and have decided to stop taking whatever has been helping me through it. I’m in a good place and ready to move forward.

The broadcaster has openly discussed his struggles with mental health as a teenager. He recently presented a BBC Three documentary called Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency, which explored the topic further.

During the hour-long program, Kemp investigated the growing mental health and suicide crisis among young men, a search prompted by the unexpected loss of his close friend, who had kept his struggles hidden.

Last year, the 32-year-old publicly shared that he had stopped taking antidepressants for the first time since his teenage years. He explained to his followers that he was curious to understand his natural emotions, even if it meant experiencing more crying or occasional irritability. He emphasized that he wasn’t against medication, but believes people should do what’s best for their own well-being. In a recent conversation, he elaborated on this decision, telling his partner that stopping the medication was a journey to discover his true feelings. While the antidepressants helped him through a difficult time, he realized he hadn’t truly known himself – what made him happy, sad, or emotional – since he was 15. He admitted it’s been challenging, bringing back panic and anxiety attacks, but sees this as a test of how he’ll handle his emotions moving forward.

Celebrity Race Across the World continues on BBC One and iPlayer on Thursday 27th November at 8pm.
