The popular comedy series starring Glen Powell has been renewed for another season. The streaming service announced on Wednesday that a second season has been ordered, continuing the story of Russ Holliday, a former football player who makes a comeback by secretly playing for the South Georgia Catfish.
The character of Chad Powers is inspired by segments from Omaha Productions’ ESPN series, “Eli’s Places.” In those segments, Eli Manning would use disguises and special effects to secretly try out for the Penn State football team as a walk-on player. Eli Manning is still involved with the show as an executive producer, alongside his brother Peyton Manning and producer Rob Powell, who co-created the series with Michael Waldron.
Alongside Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, the series Chad Powers features Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia Yeager, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, and Steve Zahn as Coach Jake Hudson. The first season consisted of six episodes and concluded with a dramatic cliffhanger: Ricky, who is both the team’s offensive coordinator and the coach’s daughter, learns Holliday’s true identity.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics (57% on Rotten Tomatoes), the show was a hit with audiences, earning an 85% approval rating on Popcornmeter. Combined with its strong performance – it was the most-watched show on both Hulu and Disney+ when it premiered – this success led to the show being renewed for another season.
Chad Powers Will Return to Hulu for Season 2
I’ve noticed that ‘Chad Powers’ feels a lot like those ‘Eli’s Places’ videos on ESPN, but it’s clear the creators also took ideas from other sources too. It’s not just a copy of one thing; they’ve blended a bunch of influences together.
When discussing the show’s influences, creator Christopher Storer told TV Insider that while sports movies like Bull Durham were inspirations, they drew even more heavily from films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Tootsie. He explained that Chad Powers centers on imperfect people who use a disguise to learn something about themselves – a lesson they likely wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.
Powell shared a similar idea in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He explained that the original concept contained a fundamental flaw, and he suggested focusing on what made the source material unique. He jokingly proposed approaching it with the same sincerity as the film Mrs. Doubtfire, asking what that would look like. He believed this unconventional approach could be successful. After writing the pilot episode, the positive reception led to the show being ordered, which Powell described as the most enjoyable experience of his career.
Hulu’s new show follows Russ Holliday, a former college football star whose career was derailed by a major mistake eight years ago. Now, he’s attempting a comeback by pretending to be Chad Powers, a quirky and surprisingly skilled player, and joining the struggling South Georgia Catfish team.
You can currently watch Season 1 of Chad Powell on Hulu. As of now, there’s no release date announced for Season 2 of Chad Powers.
