Chadwick Boseman’s legacy will live on in Hollywood.

Five years after Chadwick Boseman, the star of Black Panther, tragically passed away at age 43 after fighting colon cancer, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His wife, Simone Ledward-Boseman, paid tribute to the late actor at the unveiling ceremony by bringing something special to represent him.

At the November 20th event, Simone Boseman placed a pair of Chadwick’s shoes on his Hollywood Star, symbolizing him “stepping” onto the memorial with her and his brothers, Derrick and Kevin. The family also shared a framed photo of Chadwick, the actor known for films like Get on Up, and posed for pictures together.

It was lovely to see Michael B. Jordan and Letitia Wright at the ceremony, but I was especially moved to hear from Ryan Coogler and Viola Davis. Both are incredibly talented – Ryan, of course, directed Black Panther, and Viola was a powerhouse in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. They both had important things to say at the event.

Simone, who had secretly married Chadwick shortly before he passed away, spoke to the audience about the lasting impact of her late husband.

She described Chad as more than just an actor or artist, explaining he was a deeply spiritual person strengthened by his loved ones. He had a tight-knit family and close friends who kept him rooted in his faith, a supportive team who believed in him and always had his back, and colleagues who shared his creative vision and formed a strong bond. She emphasized how incredibly important those relationships were, and expressed her gratitude.

The 35-year-old explained that Chad was a wonderful teacher and a generous person. He had so much kindness and warmth to give that he shared pieces of himself with everyone, yet still had plenty of love left over for the world.

Simone spoke fondly of Chadwick’s lasting impact, sharing that she still feels close to him and remembers his artistry every day.

You cared deeply about others, about the community, and about making a difference. You cared about me. You were like a big brother, and I never fully had the chance to tell you how much you meant to me, or to properly thank you while you were here.

I now understand how precious time is with those we love and admire. I’m going to miss your honesty, your kindness, your humor, and your amazing talent. I’ll especially miss sharing scenes with you. From now on, I’m dedicating my life to living as you did – with grace, courage, and without regrets. He was a king, truly. Rest in peace, brother.

He was a wonderfully kind, funny, and peaceful person with an infectious laugh. He was also incredibly thoughtful and genuinely good. I’m still struggling to accept this loss, which is felt deeply by me and so many others worldwide. My heart especially goes out to the children he inspired, who have lost a hero they had just discovered. I’m grateful for the experience of working with him on Black Panther, and I will always cherish knowing him, learning from his guidance, and calling him my friend.

He wrote, “That was who he was.” Coogler also beautifully compared Boseman to a spectacular firework, saying he would cherish the memories of witnessing Boseman’s talent for the rest of his life.
