The anime and manga series Chainsaw Man features a character, Denji, whose powers come from people’s fear of chainsaws – a fear famously amplified by the horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This 1970s movie is notorious for being so disturbing that some viewers have actually thought it was a real event. Recently, to celebrate a major anniversary of the film and its characters, the creator of Chainsaw Man, Tatsuki Fujimoto, arranged a surprising crossover between the two franchises.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary release of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 4K, manga artist Tatsuki Fujimoto (creator of Chainsaw Man) shared his appreciation for the horror classic. Fujimoto described the film as a powerful mix of gore, sadness, and even love. He believes first-time viewers will be shocked – and captivated – by the film’s striking use of color and the surprisingly sympathetic portrayal of Leatherface, noting he might even come across as endearing. While the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre remains his favorite, Fujimoto recommends the sequels for anyone who enjoyed the first film, praising them for offering a uniquely satisfying emotional release.
Leatherface x Denji
2025 marked a significant year for Denji and the Chainsaw Devil with the release of the first Chainsaw Man movie. While Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc didn’t surpass Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle at the box office – a difficult feat for any anime film – it still proved to be a success. Demon Slayer’s latest movie became the highest-grossing anime film ever, earning hundreds of millions of dollars. Ultimately, Chainsaw Man The Movie confirmed that Denji’s action-packed story is a popular hit with audiences.
While Leatherface and the Sawyer family haven’t been featured in an anime series, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has continued to evolve beyond the original 1970s film. Numerous sequels have explored Leatherface’s origins and reimagined his story. Though nothing is officially in the works, there have been efforts to create a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. Recently, Osgood Perkins, the director of The Monkey and Longlegs, spoke about a project that ultimately didn’t move forward.
I’m really passionate about this project, and we definitely gave it our all! Honestly, I’m a little in the dark about where things stand right now. We were so enthusiastic about the possibility and fully committed – Neon and I really put ourselves forward, hoping to create something that captured the same magic as the original. It would have been amazing, but right now, I just don’t know what’s happening with it.
