The anime film *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* broke records, earning massive profits in theaters. While *Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc* isn’t expected to surpass *Demon Slayer*’s box office numbers, it has surprisingly outperformed the series in another area. A successful shonen franchise generates revenue from more than just its anime adaptation.
A recent report from Oricon shows that *Chainsaw Man* outsold *Demon Slayer* in manga sales for the week of September 22nd to 28th by a significant margin – more than double the copies. *Chainsaw Man* sold 172,517 copies, while *Demon Slayer* sold approximately 77,796. Surprisingly, *Demon Slayer* also fell to third place, overtaken by *The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity*. This series, created by Saka Mikami, recently finished its first anime season, which likely boosted manga sales.
Chainsaw Man’s Big Boom
The movie *Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc* has been a huge success in Japan, holding the number one spot in theaters for three weeks straight. While North American fans haven’t been able to see it yet, it’s confirmed to arrive on October 24th. While it might not match the two-week run of *Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle* at the top of the North American box office, we’re always open to being surprised!
Although *Chainsaw Man* also involves supernatural dangers, Denji’s journey is quite different from the heroes in *Demon Slayer*. The series, created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, focuses on a protagonist who struggles to get by and simply wants a peaceful life, unlike Tanjiro’s quest for revenge. However, *Chainsaw Man* often delivers even more intense action and violence, and fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming battle against the Bomb Devil.
As of today, it’s unclear what the future holds for *Chainsaw Man* after the first film. We at egmr.ru recently spoke with MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka at Anime Expo about Denji’s story following *Chainsaw Man The Movie*, and even he doesn’t know what direction the series will take next.
We’re not sure if this approach will continue, but we plan to evaluate each new story individually, just like we did with Reze. We’ll determine the best format – whether a film or a television season – based on what best suits the next story arc. We haven’t made any decisions about that yet.
