Challenge Anneka episode pulled from the schedules over 2 years ago will finally air

After being off television for two years, Channel 5 has revealed the release date for the last, previously unseen episode of Challenge Anneka.

The final episode of the series will air on Sunday, October 5th at 10:30pm on Channel 5, though the reason for the long delay in releasing it isn’t known.

In this episode, Anneka and the Challenge team are helping the Luton Sea and Royal Marine Cadets. They’ll be working together to create a special medal recognizing exceptional effort and to improve the cadets’ training spaces – everything from where they sleep to their boats and equipment.

The show first appeared on BBC One from 1989 to 1995. It then came back on ITV in 2006, running until 2007.

After more than ten years, Channel 5 announced it was bringing back the show, ordering four new episodes.

The show initially released episodes in 2023, but the last one wasn’t available on 5 until recently.

When they took that episode off the air, a representative from Channel 5 explained it to me like this: they really want people to enjoy the whole series, and they felt pulling the episode would ultimately let more viewers discover it and appreciate it properly. It’s all about getting the best possible audience for each installment, you know?

The show features beloved TV personality Rice, known from shows like Treasure Hunt and Strictly Come Dancing, as he assists local communities with challenging projects, often needing to be completed within just a few days.

I’m sorry to report that Challenge Anneka won’t be back for another season. Ben Frow, the head of content at Channel 5, confirmed the news at the Edinburgh TV Festival. It seems we won’t be seeing Anneka Rice tackling any more challenges on our screens, at least not for now.

He explained that they recognized two weeks before the show aired it wasn’t going to work. Similar home renovation programs had already become popular, and the television landscape had changed drastically. What Anneka Richardson was doing, which was groundbreaking thirty years ago, no longer fit the current market, and they wouldn’t pursue that format again.
