Channel 4 confirms “hugely ambitious” survival show in new “social experiment”

Channel 4 has announced a brand new take on the survival genre in the form of Apocalypse.

As a “daring and far-reaching social exploration,” Channel 4 plans to transport a team of everyday individuals to an abandoned town, which seems to have suffered a catastrophic, apocalypse-like incident.

As a movie buff, I’d put it like this: During those 28 days, I found myself in a situation where modern comforts such as running water, heating, and electricity were out of reach. To make it through, I had to improvise and scavenge for food and supplies. Furthermore, I discovered the art of repurposing items, but only if I had the necessary skills to do so effectively.

In the face of such scarce resources, can a group of strangers band together or fall apart?

In the eight-episode show, we invite viewers to ponder potential crises of today. Should a catastrophic incident occur, the struggle for existence would likely unfold not within the wilderness of jungles, forests, or desert islands, but instead amidst the urban landscapes and familiar towns that people consider home.

According to Nicola Brown, creative director at The Garden, the upcoming project titled Apocalypse represents a highly ambitious reimagining of the cherished survival genre. In this production, we place our characters in an astonishingly detailed urban setting, brimming with remnants of contemporary civilization.

In this strange yet recognizable realm, they’ll embark on a fresh journey, learning anew what truly matters to them. We eagerly anticipate following their adventures as our characters encounter challenging decisions, braving the elements and potentially confronting one another.

Ian Dunkley, a commissioning editor at Channel 4, mentioned: “Apocalypse will be the genuine article – common people in a true-to-life urban environment encountering extraordinary yet highly plausible obstacles. This series aims to provide us with an insightful perspective on how we might react if disaster hit our own community.

A release date is yet to be confirmed.
