As a movie connoisseur with a penchant for political dramas and a soft spot for British humor, I am absolutely thrilled about Channel 4’s upcoming two-parter, Brian and Margaret. The pairing of Steve Coogan, who has mastered the art of satire in roles like Alan Partridge, and Harriet Walter, whose portrayal of Lady Thatcher in The Crown was nothing short of mesmerizing, promises an electrifying on-screen encounter.
4 Channel has unveiled a set of photos featuring the cast of their forthcoming two-episode series titled “Brian and Margaret,” starring Steve Coogan and Harriet Walter.
In the upcoming series, actors known for their roles in Alan Partridge and Succession will take on new characters – portraying Brian Walden as a journalist and Margaret Thatcher in a different light.
The play is penned by James Graham, known for his work “Sherwood”, and directed by Stephen Frears, famously recognized for “The Regime”. It’s adapted from Rob Burley’s book titled “Why This Deceitful Scoundrel is Lying to Me”: A Quest for Truth in Political TV.
1989 marked a pivotal moment when Brian and Margaret unexpectedly found themselves engaged in what would become one of the most influential political discussions ever recorded during their final television appearance together.
The intense 45-minute confrontation sparked nationwide discussions, leading to a chain reaction of occurrences that ultimately resulted in Margaret’s resignation.
“Afterwards, they never spoke again…”
Back in January, I myself spilled the beans about my role in this upcoming project during an engaging chat with the British Comedy Guide.
In the past, he mentioned: “Brian Walden stood out as an insightful, comprehensive interviewer during the era when extended interviews lasting up to 50 minutes with politicians were common; it’s rare nowadays. He followed in the footsteps of [David] Frost, but with his unique style.
As a fervent enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge that he was indeed the shining beacon of ITV’s interview realm, skillfully mastering the role of an interrogator. Interestingly, I find myself embarking on a dramatic journey, sharing the screen with the illustrious Harriet Walter, portraying Margaret Thatcher. I eagerly anticipate the commencement of filming for this captivating project in the near future.
In 2025, a two-part drama, spanning an hour each, is set to be broadcast. This production continues Coogan’s acting journey, which includes recent appearances in The Reckoning and Despicable Me 4, as well as Joker: Folie à Deux, hitting UK theaters this very week.
Brian and Margaret will air on Channel 4 next year.
