Channing Tatum Teases Avengers: Doomsday Secret Cameos (Is That a Good Thing?)

Avengers: Doomsday is looking to be a hugely ambitious project for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios has successfully brought back directors Anthony and Joe Russo to lead the film, and they’ve also convinced Robert Downey Jr. to play the famous villain Doctor Doom. The cast is already enormous, featuring the current Avengers team, the newly introduced Fantastic Four, and even characters from the older X-Men movies. Channing Tatum is also back as Gambit, a role he got to play briefly in the multiversal film Deadpool & Wolverine. Now that filming has finished, the actors are starting to create a lot of excitement about what Marvel has planned for viewers.

“[Marvel] consistently raised the stakes with each film, and somehow surpassed them every time,” Tatum explained in an interview with ET. “I can tell you this: while reading [the script], I kept thinking, ‘How are they going to pull this off?!’ It’s unbelievable. It’s going to be mind-blowing – like when Blade (Wesley Snipes) appears in Deadpool & Wolverine, people will be completely overwhelmed. But this will be even more intense, maybe 50 times over. And the story… I can’t share any details, but as a comic book fan, I promise you’re not prepared for what’s coming.”

During the interview, Tatum got so excited that he almost let slip the name of a major cameo in the film, but he caught himself just in time. He nearly said a name starting with the letter “D,” which has intensified the ongoing and popular rumors that Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will appear in Avengers: Doomsday.

Should Avengers: Doomsday Be So Dependent on Surprise Cameos?

Though surprising cameos can make movies truly memorable, they work best when they actually contribute to the story. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the appearance of previous Spider-Men (Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield) helped Tom Holland’s Peter Parker develop into the hero he was meant to be, offering him crucial support and a new outlook. Likewise, characters like Blade, Gambit, X-23 (Dafne Keen), and Elektra (Jennifer Garner) felt natural in Deadpool & Wolverine because their inclusion tied directly into the film’s central ideas. This is because the movie specifically addresses the importance of maintaining and respecting the history of Marvel films that weren’t originally part of the main MCU storyline.

Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be visually stunning and exciting, but it needs to be more than just a showcase of well-known characters. In 2025, Marvel Studios experienced several box office disappointments. Even movies that critics liked, such as Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps, didn’t make as much money as expected, particularly considering how much they cost to make and promote. Given that Avengers: Doomsday is said to be one of Marvel’s most expensive films yet, the studio needs a well-developed and understandable story-more than just a series of fun, but ultimately meaningless, celebrity appearances. The movie’s financial success and the future of the franchise depend on compelling storytelling; simply surprising audiences won’t be enough.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
