Charlie Hunnam is creating anarchy once again.
Charlie Hunnam, known for his role in *Sons of Anarchy*, plays the notorious murderer Ed Gein in the chilling trailer for Netflix’s *Monster: The Ed Gein Story*.
The recently released preview shows Charlie Hunnam dramatically changing his voice to play the disturbing killer and grave robber who has a terrifying obsession with wearing human skin. But the preview leaves viewers wondering: how did someone from a normal background in Plainfield, Wisconsin, become such a monster?
Gein confesses in the clip, “I just feel like I’m a puzzle and none of the pieces fit.”
In a preview clip, Eddie’s mother (played by Laurie Metcalf) tells him, “Eddie, you’re a mess,” and then he unexpectedly disrobes in front of her.
One of Eddie Gein’s young friends noticed a disturbing darkness within him, saying, “You’ve got something really unsettling about you, Eddie.”
The film shows Gein dismembering human remains and turning the flesh into pieces resembling clothing. He then targets a young woman named Evelyn Hartley (played by Addison Rae), trapping and terrifying her in his basement workshop while she’s wearing lingerie.
Whether it was crafting masks from human skin, committing violent stabbings, or carrying out gruesome hangings, Ed Gein’s cruelty seemed limitless.
As the show describes, Ed Gein’s terrifying crimes heavily influenced the creation of many famous villains in Hollywood movies.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of true crime documentaries, and this one is particularly chilling. Netflix describes the story of Eddie Gein as being about a ‘serial killer, grave robber, and psycho,’ and honestly, that’s putting it mildly. Picture this: 1950s Wisconsin, a seemingly normal, quiet man living on a rundown farm. But behind closed doors, he was creating something truly horrific, something that really changed how we think about monsters in movies and TV. It all stemmed from deep isolation, a troubled mind, and an unhealthy attachment to his mother. It’s a disturbing story, but it really offers a look into the darkness that can brew when someone is completely cut off from the world.
From classics like *Psycho*, *The Texas Chainsaw Massacre*, and *The Silence of the Lambs*, Ed Gein’s disturbing life inspired countless fictional monsters and sparked a widespread fascination with true crime. He didn’t just impact the horror genre-he essentially created the model for modern horror villains.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear Charlie Hunnam talk about his upcoming role as Ed Kemper in *Monster*. He recently shared that the show won’t just focus on the terrible crimes, but really dive deep into *who* Ed was as a person – a raw, honest, and incredibly sensitive look at the man behind the monster. It sounds like he’s aiming for a really human portrayal, and that’s exactly what I’ve been hoping for!
Check out the horrifying trailer above.
Netflix will release *Monster: The Ed Gein Story* on October 3rd. Before then, check out stories about other actors who have portrayed real-life criminals and notorious figures from true crime cases.
Jake Lacy plays a seemingly friendly neighbor in the Peacock series *A Friend of the Family*, but the character he portrays, Robert “B” Berchtold, was actually a dangerous criminal. In real life, Berchtold kidnapped the eldest daughter of his neighbors, Jan Broberg, on two separate occasions during the 1970s.
For his role as suspected serial killer Larry Hall in the Apple TV+ series *Black Bird*, actor Paul Walter Hauser, known for his work in *Richard Jewell*, lost 40 pounds.
Hauser praised the hair and makeup artists for creating Mark Hall’s signature look, including his well-known muttonchop sideburns, which Hall playfully referred to as “burnsides.”
Jessica Biel plays Candy Montgomery, a woman accused of murder, in the Hulu series *Candy*. Biel completely changes her look for the role, sporting Candy’s curly hair and large glasses. Fans of Biel’s earlier work, like *7th Heaven*, might not even recognize her!
Renee Zellweger, the Academy Award-winning actress, underwent a complete physical transformation to play convicted killer Pam Hupp in the NBC series *The Thing About Pam*. She used prosthetics and padding to convincingly portray Hupp, and the show is based on the hugely popular true crime podcast from *Dateline*.
The TV series *The Thing About Pam* tells the story of Betsy Faria’s 2011 murder and the initial conviction of her husband, Russ. Although Russ was later proven innocent, the case uncovered a devious plot orchestrated by Pam.
The Thing About Pam premiered Mar. 8, 2022 on NBC.
Joey King, known for her role in *The Kissing Booth*, shaved her head to play Gypsy Rose in the Hulu miniseries *The Act*. The show tells the story of Gypsy, who was presented by her mother, Dee Dee, as severely ill and having the mental development of a young child for many years. The truth came out after Dee Dee’s murder, revealing that Gypsy was actually a healthy adult.
Patricia Arquette, known for her dramatic physical transformations – including for her award-winning role in *Escape at Dannemora* – again changed her appearance to play Dee Dee. While she gained weight for the part, it wasn’t quite enough to perfectly match the real woman, especially considering the significant weight changes she’d already experienced while filming *Dannemora*.
Honestly, seeing her – she was significantly larger than me, probably around a hundred pounds heavier – completely overwhelmed me. I genuinely thought I was going to collapse right then and there. It felt like my body just couldn’t take it, and I knew I had to stop what I was doing immediately. It was a scary moment, and I just needed to rest.
Actor Troy Garity returned to television to play John Meehan, a criminal with a troubled history, in Bravo’s series *Dirty John*.
In the series Dirty John, Connie Britton plays Debra Newell, a woman who believed she’d met her perfect match, only to discover he was far from it.
The Designing Women and Fargo veteran is almost unrecognizable as Debra’s mother Arlane Hart.
Edie Falco, known for her role in *Nurse Jackie*, played a lawyer with curly hair during the first season of *Law & Order: True Crime*. That season covered the well-known case of the Menendez brothers. In 1994, Lyle and Erik Menendez were found guilty in a highly publicized trial for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, who were wealthy and worked in the entertainment industry.
Al Pacino, the Academy Award-winning actor, portrayed Phil Spector in the HBO movie of the same name. The film depicts the story of the famous music producer, known for his innovative “Wall of Sound” technique, and his conviction for the 2003 murder of actress Lana Clarkson following a night of drinking.
As a style and transformation expert, I have to say Darren Criss *completely* nailed his portrayal of Gianni Versace for Ryan Murphy’s *American Crime Story*. He underwent a remarkable physical transformation to embody the iconic designer, who tragically lost his life outside his Miami home on July 15th, 1997, at the hands of Andrew Cunanan. It was a truly immersive performance, and the attention to detail in recreating Versace’s look was stunning.
The Spanish actress wore a very blonde wig to portray Gianni Versace’s stylish sister in the second season of *American Crime Story*.
Former *Glee* actor Dylan McDermott played the role of Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace’s murderer, in the second season of Ryan Murphy’s *American Crime Story*. Cunanan, 28, was responsible for at least four deaths before fatally shooting the famous fashion designer outside his Miami home on July 15, 1997. He died by suicide on July 24, 1997.
The film *Girl in the Box* features an actress portraying a woman kidnapped and held captive in a box for seven years by Cameron Hooker, where she was sexually abused. Hooker’s wife ultimately reported his crimes, leading to a 104-year prison sentence.
The British actor, known for his role in *Game of Thrones*, underwent a significant physical transformation to play the leader of the Manson Family in the drama *Aquarius*.
As someone who follows true crime and pop culture, I remember when the Amanda Knox story really gripped the world. Back in 2011, I watched the Lifetime movie *Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy*, and the actress playing Knox did a compelling job. The film, of course, covered the tragic case of Meredith Kercher, who was found murdered in Perugia, Italy, back in 2007 while Amanda Knox was studying abroad. It was a really unsettling time, and the trial received a lot of attention.
Cuba Gooding Jr., an Academy Award winner, played O.J. Simpson in the FX series *American Crime Story* starting in 2016. The show focused on the 1994 trial where the former football star was accused of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ron Goldman.
The actress, known for her role in *Orange Is the New Black*, portrayed a woman who was kidnapped and held captive for almost ten years in the 2015 Lifetime movie *Cleveland Abduction*. She played the oldest of three women held by Ariel Castro, who they finally escaped from in 2013.
Sarah Paulson, a frequent collaborator with Ryan Murphy, completely reinvented herself and won an Emmy in 2016 for playing the determined lead prosecutor in FX’s *American Crime Story*, which focused on the O.J. Simpson trial.
Robin Williams’ daughter, Zelda, played the wife of the kidnapper in the TV movie *Girl in the Box*. The film tells the true story of Colleen Stan, a woman held captive and sexually abused for seven years by a couple.
For his role in the 2012 Lifetime movie *Drew Peterson: Untouchable*, actor Rob Lowe changed his appearance with a new haircut and mustache. He played Drew Peterson, a former police sergeant who was convicted in 2012 of murdering his third wife, following the disappearance of his fourth wife. Peterson was sentenced to 38 years in prison on February 21, 2013, and his fourth wife, Stacy, remains missing.
The well-known actor began his career on television and later revisited that early success when he portrayed the famous lawyer from O.J. Simpson’s defense team in the 2016 series, *American Crime Story*.
The actor, known for his role in *Grey’s Anatomy*, portrayed Charles “Tex” Watson in the TV movie *Helter Skelter*. Watson was a member of the Charles Manson Family, and the film was based on Vincent Bugliosi’s famous book about the crimes.
The actress, known for her distinctive hairstyle, starred as the killer in the TV movie *Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret*, which dramatized the murder of her former boyfriend, Travis Alexander.
In the 2015 TV movie *Beautiful & Twisted*, the actor portrayed Ben Novak, a millionaire who was murdered. Ben’s wife, Narcy Novak, was found guilty of planning his murder and received a life sentence with no chance of parole.
The actress from *Charmed* starred as the notorious teenager in the 1993 Lifetime movie, *Casualties of Love: The Long Island Lolita Story*. The film depicted the story of Joey Buttafuoco’s jealous young lover, who famously shot his wife, Mary Jo Buttafuoco.
The former child actor later starred in the TV movie *Lizzie Borden Took an Ax* and the mini-series *The Lizzie Borden Chronicles*, both of which dramatized the story of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an ax in Fall River, Rhode Island, in 1892.
