It seems like Taylor Swift’s declaration has come true.
The NFL has confirmed that singer Charlie Puth will perform the national anthem at the 2026 Super Bowl, recognizing his popularity as a major artist. The announcement was made on November 30th.
After the announcement, one critic expressed disappointment, comparing the singer of “We Don’t Talk Anymore” unfavorably to Whitney Houston’s iconic 1991 Super Bowl national anthem performance. They posted on X (formerly Twitter) on December 1st that they didn’t expect a strong vocal performance.
Even though someone made a joke at his expense, Charlie used the moment to reassure fans that he was still committed to kicking off the major game in February.
He posted on X, saying he doesn’t pretend to sing as well as Whitney Houston. However, he promised they’re creating a beautiful musical arrangement, and it will be in the key of D major.
The 33-year-old even added, “It’ll be one of my best vocal performances.”
Charlie will be singing the national anthem before Brandi Carlile performs “America the Beautiful” and Coco Jones sings “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” He feels prepared, but recognizes how challenging it is to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and even joked about the song’s difficulty.
In a recent Instagram video, he pointed out that one of the most gorgeous songs is also incredibly challenging for singers. He explained, almost like a football coach giving instructions, that ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ demands an unusually wide vocal range.
Charlie explained that many difficult songs only cover an octave – the range from a low D to a high D. However, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is much wider, stretching from a low D to a high D and then continuing five notes higher, all the way up to a very high A.
Despite some criticism, Bad Bunny has the NFL’s complete backing, as the league announced in September he’ll be performing at the halftime show.

According to Jon Barker, the NFL’s senior vice president of global event production, the Super Bowl is the largest entertainment event globally, and they’re excited to feature musicians who represent the best in music and culture. He explained that the Super Bowl is more than just a game—it’s a worldwide celebration, and these artists will add to the excitement and help create a memorable experience for fans everywhere.
Before Charlie and Bad Bunny take the stage at the 2026 Super Bowl, let’s revisit some of the greatest Super Bowl performances ever.
