Charlize Theron Teases an Old Guard Trilogy (But Will It Happen?)

Approximately five years after its initial release on Netflix, “The Old Guard 2” has now premiered on the streaming platform. Filming for “The Old Guard 2” concluded three years ago; however, the movie experienced multiple delays due to leadership changes at Netflix and strikes in Hollywood. Given the considerable time gap between films, it remains uncertain whether there will be more installments in this franchise. Nevertheless, the leading actress Charlize Theron has subtly suggested a trilogy during a recent interview with ComicBook, generating excitement for the eagerly awaited sequel.

Theron, who is also a producer on the movies, was questioned about the possibility of a third film in the series. In response, he said, “I’m not trying to be mysterious… At the moment, we are simply taking a break. Ideally, fans will enjoy it, and that’s where we stand currently.

Five years ago, when “The Old Guard” premiered on Netflix, it was a massive success. It boasted a ‘Fresh’ rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and topped streaming charts upon release. Regrettably, the sequel faced several hurdles. Firstly, it has been five years since the initial movie, and secondly, a new director is helming it. The possibility of further sequels will hinge significantly on the reception of “The Old Guard 2” on Netflix, and whether it can gather a large enough audience to cover the costs of another film.

In the sequel to the acclaimed comic book series penned by Greg Rucka and beautifully illustrated by Leandro Fernandez, titled The Old Guard 2, we find Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngô, Henry Golding, Uma Thurman and Chiwetel Ejiofor taking center stage.

The second installment of “The Old Guard” continues the story, focusing on Andy (Theron), grappling with her recent understanding of mortality, and her band of immortal combatants, reinvigorated in their duty to safeguard the planet. Picking up from where the initial film ends, Booker (Schoenaerts) remains in exile due to his past transgressions, while Quynh (Ngô) seeks vengeance following her escape from her underwater confinement. The team, consisting of Andy, Nile (Layne), Joe (Kenzari), Nicky (Marinelli), and James Copley (Ejiofor), seek assistance from Tuah (Golding), an old acquaintance who could potentially unravel the enigma surrounding their immortal lives. Known as “The Old Guard 2”, this film is a heartfelt, action-packed sequel, stemming from the universe conceived by Rucka and artist Fernandez. Co-written for the screenplay by Rucka alongside Sarah L. Walker.

Audiences can currently stream both “The Old Guard” and its follow-up, titled “The Old Guard 2,” solely on Netflix. However, as of today, Netflix has not officially confirmed the production of “The Old Guard 3.
