Many people are hesitant to upgrade to Windows 11 not just because of its strict hardware needs and design issues, but also due to Microsoft’s increasing use of ads within the operating system, even as support for Windows 10 ends. Interestingly, Linux is becoming more popular, likely because it doesn’t include ads or track user data.
OpenAI is widely considered a leading AI research lab. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes this success is due to the company having a two-year head start, giving them the time to create ChatGPT without direct competition.
However, OpenAI might be undoing all its hard work. Recent reports, including one from Tech Radar, suggest the company is planning to add advertisements to ChatGPT.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, had initially said that using ads in ChatGPT would only happen if other ways to make money didn’t work. However, he didn’t rule it out completely. He explained that while he doesn’t generally like ads, the idea of combining them with AI feels particularly concerning.
It looks like ChatGPT might soon start showing ads. Recent code discoveries indicate the company is currently testing advertisements within the chatbot itself.
ChatGPT users can’t entertain the thoughts of ads

OpenAI is dealing with financial difficulties as it competes with companies like Anthropic and Google in the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence. Investors are worried about the large amounts of money being spent on developing this technology, as it’s not yet clear how OpenAI will become profitable.
A recent report raises concerns about OpenAI’s financial future, suggesting it may not become profitable by 2030. Even if the company survives until then, it could require another $207 billion in investment to ensure its long-term viability.
It wasn’t surprising when OpenAI started thinking about adding ads to ChatGPT. The company is spending money quickly, and recent financial reports suggest they may have lost around $11.5 billion while developing AI technology, according to Microsoft’s data from the last fiscal year.
Recent reports show the AI company is currently making as much as $13 billion a year from people using ChatGPT and its underlying language technology. CEO Sam Altman believes this could jump dramatically to $100 billion by 2027. However, the company’s costs are so high that it’s unlikely to be able to cover them with current income. Introducing advertising to ChatGPT seems like a likely solution to bridge that gap.
I’m surprised to hear the company might start showing ads, even to users who pay for subscriptions like the $200/month ChatGPT Pro plan. In fact, some subscribers are already posting screenshots of ads appearing while they use the chatbot, which seems strange.
Daniel McAuley, a data scientist at OpenAI, clarified that the pop-up users were seeing wasn’t an advertisement, but rather a suggestion. He did acknowledge, however, that the suggestion wasn’t very relevant and could be confusing. OpenAI appears to be testing different suggestions within ChatGPT, aiming to make the overall experience better.
Despite strong user complaints and negative reactions on social media, advertising seems like a necessary step for OpenAI to continue running ChatGPT. While many users dislike the idea, it may be essential for the platform’s survival.
According to one Redditor:
Currently, ChatGPT is losing money and needs to increase its income ninefold just to cover its costs. It’s only able to operate because companies are investing billions in its development.
Without a major breakthrough like limitless, cheap energy or incredibly durable computer hardware, it’s unlikely this venture will become profitable. Even if they significantly raise prices and rely heavily on advertising, it probably won’t be enough to stay afloat.
Nobody is going to pay $1k per month for this, and they know that.”
As an analyst, I’m watching OpenAI and ChatGPT closely, and right now it’s unclear whether their future will be shaped by advertising or remain a user-friendly, ad-free experience. Only time will reveal which path they take.
